from a liberal stronghold - Seattle Washington.

Aside from the aricle demonstrating things are getting worse, even with the massive stimulus, but people are recognizing that Obama sold them a bill of goods that he could not deliver on.

While Biden talks of son of stimulus, it is more of the same that is NOT working. When are they going to realize government programs DO NOT stimulate the economy ... in fact make it worse.

I missed the part about how the stimulus is not working and it is all Obama's fault. Are you talking about the 4 comments at the bottom?

The truth is consumer confidence is down because the job loss numbers are up. People tend not to buy if they are unsure they are going to have a job. And people are saving.

I don't know if you noticed, but this is actually an AP article out of NY.

Houd, if jobless number are continuing to increase and that is causing confindence to fall, as you say (which I agree), after rising on all the hope and change talk. Let me ask you ... what was the $787 billion stimulus for? Wasn't it to create jobs? So if it is not, then it is not working.

I don't know that I ever thought that any real jobs would be created from the stimulus bill. At least, not enough to make a big impact. I'm cynical about these things. Maybe the current shedding of jobs needed to happen, and when we emerge from this current economic cycle, businesses will be leaner and better organized.
I think all that is happening needed to happen, painful as it is.

So that is what is/was wrong with the economy. Hmm, whow knew?

Hound, that may be the most inane statement you have ever made here.

I guess that is true if you think guvment is the answer to all problems. How can you get folks dependent on the guvment if they have productive JOBS.

LTL is like a chameleon - Swimmer - DJ - lazarous - and maybe even more. It doesn't take much effort to figure it out.

Hound: Maybe you never believed the stimulus bill would create jobs but it was sold as a jobs creation bill by Obama and the Democrats in Congress. That is why not one Republican in the House signed on and why they could only gather up a handful of RINOs in the Senate.

What is even more mystifying to me is how could anyone support adding hundreds of billions of dollars to our deficit for no discernible return on that investment. I think you are completely correct about the relationship between consumer confidence and jobs but you are missing another factor that belies the general pessimism about our economy and the steps being taken by the Obama administration to allegedly rectify it. That is the dramatic increase in the savings rate.

I read recently that the savings rate in the U.S. has risen to over 7%. On the one hand it is a good thing that Americans are doing some balance sheet repair but the problem is they are responding to their loss in net worth resulting from a reduction in home values, 401k/IRA's and stock accounts. This dramatic increase in the savings rate becomes a downward spiral because by removing that much spending from the economy over a very short timeframe they will only further erode consumer confidence and jobs thereby further eroding consumer balance sheets causing them to save more. This is exactly the problem that plagued Japan and caused them to experience a 10 year recession when the U.S. recovered more quickly.

DJ is DJ, I am I. I only use one moniker at a time. It is all I need. If what you say is true, Bruce would delete them I am sure. I did see DJ early Sunday morning. He rode up on a very nice PWC with a freind. We were busy cleanig up from the night before. He only popped in because I told him about the deleted thread.

I continue to find it funny that anyone that dare to agree with me, must be me in the eyes of some.

"I only use one moniker at a time" - as do I because I only use one computer at a time.

Read into it anything you wish. LTL, Swimmer, Burran, CEO of the VRWC, and many others I can't recall now are dead. I don't need to use multiple monikers. I don't come here for affirmation of my self esteem. I come here for entertainment and information. I provide plenty of both. Anyone who thinks it bothers Bruce doesn't understand internet advertising. He should have me on payroll, or maybe he does, only feb will never know for sure...lol.

this morning. I heard that they have only disbursed 10% of the $800M stimulus money. Anyone else heard this?

The closer to next years election, the more you will see spending go up. There are a lot of votes that have to be bought.

I had not heard the numbers as of today but when the plan came out it was apparent that only a small percentage of it would even happen in 2009 and most would occur in 2010 and beyond, presumably when a typical recession would be in full recovery. And yet despite that they want to bring us son of stimulus. It is on its face absurd and offensive to any thinking person but then again we are talking about our political class. Its not a matter of whether it will work, its just the impression that we are doing something.
