I heard on the news today that Barack and Michele Obama have decided not to join a church in the Washington area due to "security" issues and disruption of worship. He said that he enjoys the worship at Camp David.

Is it not strange that he made this decision especially when he came from a church in Chicago where the "Rev. Wright" was the pastor. Maybe the churches in the Washington area do not have a "Rev. Wright Equivalent" and the hate sermons would be seen by Americans across the nation. Or, maybe he had rather be in a Mosque but cannot due to the negative press that he would receive.

He did say that because of the commotion and disruption of services that he and his family cause, they had decided not to join one specific church, but would continue to visit various churches in DC. He went on to talk about prayer circles that he is involved with, and that he gets a daily devotional.

There are plenty of off the wall churches in DC, if that was his preference. I wonder if his security detail has recommended that for his and his family's safety that they not show up at the same place at the same time every week. They don't publish information about Presidential death threats, but I would imagine given the escalation in violence we're seeing in the country, and as well as him being the first African American President, his security detail is doing everything they can think of to keep him safe. Lots of nut cases out there.

Hound

How does this article compare to what I said and what you said?

From "The American Thinker", 3/31/2010

President Obama says First Family won't join a D.C. church
Peter Barry Chowka

On Monday, March 29, 2010, President Obama was interviewed by NBC News and portions were broadcast on the Today show on March 30. According to the The Caucus blog at the New York Times:

Mr. Obama said he would not select a church while living in the White House. "What we have decided for now is not to join a single church, and the reason is because Michelle and I have realized we are very disruptive to services," he said.

Instead, he said he would from time to time visit St. John's Church, across Lafayette Square from the White House, where many presidents have worshiped. He also said the family prefers to worship in the privacy of the presidential retreat when it spends the weekend there. "We love the chapel at Camp David," he said.

And he noted that he is sent a daily devotional on his BlackBerry.

On October 13, 2009, a column in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution answered a reader's question:

Q: How does the church attendance of President Barack Obama compare to that of his immediate predecessor? - John Walker, Doraville

A: Obama has attended church twice in Washington since his inauguration - on Easter and on Oct. 11 - at St. John's Church, said Gary Scott Smith, author of "Faith and the Presidency: From George Washington to George W. Bush" (Oxford University Press, 2009) and chairman of the history department at Grove City College, a liberal arts Christian college in Grove City, Pa. The Episcopal church is on Lafayette Square, across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House.

Smith said Obama also has worshiped a couple of times at Evergreen Chapel, a nondenominational church at Camp David in Maryland, which the president has chosen as his primary place of worship, according to a July Time magazine report. Bush attended St. John's periodically, but worshiped fairly regularly at Evergreen Chapel, Smith said.

In an article on February 22, 2010, "Obama's spiritual life takes more private turn," the Boston Globe put the number of President Obama's Washington, D.C. church attendances as President to that point at four. It is not clear if that number included the President Elect and Mrs. Obama's attendance at a prayer service at St. John's on the morning of January 20, 2009, several hours before Mr. Obama was sworn in as President.

I didn't see this article, and you didn't cite your source. What I saw was his interview with Matt Lauer, when he responded to Matt's question.

Interesting topic about the Obama's and religion. If you read the book Game Change Halperin (an Obama lover) addresses the lack of religiosity of the Obama's. He opines that Obama only joined the Rev. Wright gang of America haters (my words, not his) because of its focus on social justice issues. I think its fair to say that Obama is a marginal Christian with no strong religious beliefs, much like John McCain.

More irrogance .... every other president has had the same issue but handled it. Yet he thinks he will create more disruption than every other president that has attended a public worship.

What an irrogant piece of work.

since Obama considers himself the supreme being ... what would he need to go to church to worship when he knows what is right for everyone and is the almighty power.

from his perspective any worship of a supreme being is de facto idolatry unless said "supreme" being is himself......fortunately for him he has the left wing nuts and the government media to worship at his altar.

-I'm no Obama fan, but let's give the guy a break on his religious beliefs and activities.
-I don't know what his religious beliefs are.
-But like everybody else, I have an opinion and I like to pontificate now and then so here goes...
-Based on my observations of him and my readings of his writings, he has no strong feelings for any formal religion or church.
-If he was going to St John's every Sunday, a lot of people woould say he was just a phoney. Since he doesn't go every Sunday, a lot of people will say he's not a Christian, ..certainly not a traditional Christian. So the guy play's it somewhere down the middle.
-His mother was a radical liberal which usually means little affiliation with conservative churches. his father was a Muslim, and BO lived in Indonesia, the most populated Muslim country in teh world. While there, although he went to a Catholic school for awhile, he was listed as a Muslim and then later attended a Muslim school. After his mothe rdied he was raised by his grandparents who were radical liberals and his closest mentor was an avowed communist.
-SO what would one normaly expect of a kid raised that way? ...I would expect a sought of a hybrid religious belief at best ...and atheism as a high probability.
-I of course would like him to just declare what his beliefs are. But then I would also like him to open up his birth certificat, ...open up his tuitition records, ...open up his college classes and papers...etc.
-I still can't believe the American people and the America press supported a man whom they knew almost nothing about. It still boggles my mind. I don't blame him, I blame us! Pogo was right again!

I think if you read my original post you will see I was making no judgment about his religious beliefs, merely reporting what a friendly writer stated about Obama's religious beliefs and habits.

Obviously the response from WW and my response to him was tongue in cheek about the disturbing messianic worship of Obama from some on the left and in the government media and his own ardent narcissism.

I frankly never cared about his religion. I only cared about his big government statist views. Any focus on other issues (i.e., whether he is a closet muslim, birthers, etc.) is a complete waste of time and only distracts from the real, very disturbing issues about this guy.

Agree. Why have we not demanded to see his birth certificate?

I think he frankly benefits from this issue being prolonged because it gives him the opportunity to cast anyone opposing his statist policies as akin to the birthers. He used that line recently when asked about the Tea Party movement. I really wish they would go away so he will lose that issue. He will never release his birth certificate because he benefits from the focus on that issue.

You constantly refer to Obama as the messiah. Now, why would you be so obsessed with his church attendance? Why are the conservatives so obsessed with such earthly concepts as his birth certificate, his college thesis, his grades...... He is above that for as the messiah he was able to have the most powerful woman in American history lead the chariot charge to pass health reform.

WW calls him ignorant. I think those are the words of a jealous angry conservative who lost the battle.

Remember, the wing nuts anointed him as the messiah. To the rest of the free world, he is just President Obama.

Can him, categorize him, anoint him, whatever. He is a lier, a communist, a racist, an opportunist, and a crook, and he has proven each of these traits over and over again.

He doesn't deserve to worship God, until he confesses his many sins against the American people. How's that.

I've always regarded religion as one of the most personal and private issues. I don't think anyone should have the right to question someone else's religious beliefs or their attendance at church. And I don't think the President, any President, should be obliged to answer questions about their religious belief or how they commune with God. We have a wonderful tradition of religious freedom in this country, and that includes the right not to attend church at all.

The current battle, maybe. But GF, mark my words. The war is far from over. Don't underestimate the ability of the American people to recover from a mistake.

Uh GF, you actually have this all wrong. He was called the messiah and routinely spoken of in messianic terms by his devotees and not by me or anyone on the right. Believe me, I and others use that term for him with total derision. He is no messiah, he is a big government statist and he is wrong on almost every issue.

As for the alleged focus of conservatives on his religion, birth status, etc. I believe I pointed out above that all that is a waste of time and actually benefits him politically. But let's face facts, if three people in the entire country were fixated on these issues, the president and the government media would try to discredit all conservatives that oppose his policies by trying to cast them in the same light. Evidence for said claim is the way he artfully lumps all Tea Party members in with the few nut jobs that have gone overboard. Millions in the Tea Party = one or two nut jobs......very smart politically when you can't gin up support for your policies based on the facts. Saul Alinsky would be proud......

Of course we all know that the only real violence that has occurred has been perpetrated by the left wing nuts and union thugs....all Dem voters.

Hound, while I tend to agree with you on this (which is why I supported Romney despite his being a Mormon), I think everyone has a right to decide what makes a candidate acceptable to them or not don't they? I mean, if you have the right to oppose McCain because of his stance on Iraq I assume you would support the right of someone to oppose Obama, or maybe support another candidate, because of their religious beliefs. We all have a right to decide what is important to us vis-a-vis a political candidate we decide to support or not, right?

So if a candidate refuses to discuss his views on religion, which he has every right to do, then a person who believes religious views are important has every right to not support that candidate, correct? Just like you have the right to decide that a candidates religious views are of no interest to you in your decision making.

I agree with you because a certain amount of social issues are guided by one's religious beliefs. And I definitely would not want to have an atheist elected.
But, I think it should be off limits to question why a President has not chosen a church home, and how often he attends. There are so many ways to worship -- A quiet solitary walk can be as much of a worship, as sitting in a church.
