Thanks to those who have recommened a plumber/septic tank cmpany. Now I wonder if anyone can suggest someone to come and do the perk test for me? I understand that the list given out by Talapoosa County has a range from 400-1000 dollars. I am looking for the most economical person who does a good job. (duh)

All sites must have two perkable sites as of April 2006. You cannot just draw a box on your perk map and call it "secondary site".

What exactly is a perk test? Somone pees on the ground and times how long until it soaks in? I could do that for $400 a shot....

Speake did identify alternate sites on my property. They do a little more than suggested above - soil analysis @ various levels of the 2 holes. Tallapoosa health dep't then schedules to come out (after you pay your permit fee) looks over what was done, checks proximity to high water mark, and issues permit. This was a for a second tank on my prop - guest house - and the individual from the county commented that Speake was reliable from their perspective.

Since the requirements to obtain a permit for a septic system have become much more stringent, you should hire the person/company that has the respect of the Health Department. Larry Speakes of Speakes Engineering is really good. (334) 262-1091

I am amazed at the post's about the process and how easy it is. WRONG!!!! It took me about a year and a whole lot of money. Mrs Jones was very hard to deal with and was very "Worse case senario, DOOM AND GLOOM. Don't be suprised if she tells you that you need to buy an additional lot to pump to. That seems to be the standard speach you will hear. Unless it has changed she is only in the office about an hour and a half per day and if you are not an installer you can bet you won't be on the priority list of call backs. Yes I am bitter about the process. I am all about doing it right and making sure to do the right thing, but I feel like they don't have a user friendly attitude. I hope your experience is different.

It appears that experiences can vary. I had no trouble getting an entire second system approved on my lot in about 4 months. one perc test, one applicatioin, one visit from the county.

4 Months??? That should have been a 30 day turnaround. Lets say you had a million dollar project you were working on, and you were paying interest on that money? Would you think that 4 months is a reasonable time frame to get a permit etc. You actually made my point for me , 4 months is crazy. I had my first house done by the former Health dept guy. The whole process took about 2 weeks, and he called me with updates etc. Oh. and I didn't have to get an engineer. He would use the results that the guy's that did the perk. ( That is why you get a perk test) I would bet that she wouldn't even look at a place today unless the system had an engineer's stamp on it. My point is "It is not that complicated" I would think she has some responsibility to the people of the county to be timely and accountable. I would like too see what her credentials are. I am sure if you mention her name to any of the installers in the area you will get an ear full. That is all!!!

I don't think I would be paying interest on money if I had investigated the permit process and planned accordingly. Perhaps if we paid property taxes instead of the equivalent of an annual coffee budget we might be able to have sufficent staff to handle the workload.

Bay Pine Yankee, I assume you are originally from the North? You probably came down here to escape the outlandish taxes and regulations. It seems you would like it to be just like it was where you came from. I somehow knew when I answered this thread that it would boil down to something that the citizens of Alabama were doing wrong. NO PAYING ENOUGH Taxes. I hope you don't get your wish. I tend to like it like it is. Oh, I also came from the North, so I do know about " The you can't do anything without a permit mentality". Paying more is not the answer. Say Hi to Hillary next time you see or talk to her!!!

Based on your posts, and your attitude, I am sure you do like it the way it is. Don't be frustrated whey you are getting the caliber of service you are paying for.

You must be brain damaged or live in a complete dump to think the tax rates are too low. Throwing money at any problem is not the answer, try better management of the resourses available. Four months to get a simple permit is not acceptable by any standards and should not be tolerated by the citizens of the county. This is not the first time I have heard about this looney bird and touble getting sewer permits. Sounds like to me she needs to find a job that requires no people skills and has no authority over anything. Something like LTL has would be appropriate.

you're right - I am brain damaged and I do live in a dump. Did you consider that there is the same number of people (1) doing the job as there was a decade ago. Think the workload has increased at all? I agree that better management would help but at some point in time the best management available and the most efficient use of resources has to bend to volume the current system can't handle. As for taxes, why pay more - ranking 48th in education has always been good enough so why change it.
