They can't forecast the weather for tomorrow much less next year.

Remember they forecasted another bad hurricane season last year and NOTHING.

That's true, also forecasted a a severe tropical season this year, and recanted. But it is my hope, that the power company and corps will hold any water we recieve should there be some tropical rains that come our way.

Hopefully if we get any level rise during the coming months / winter, APCO will not release it to keep us at winter pool. We may not get it back!

my neighbor is on the conservation board. he told me AL is actually in a 10 year drought. our average is supposed to be 55inches(i think) and we haven't reached that in 10 years.

They were running the generators this afternoon at 3:00 PM. That means they've started draining Martin again.

They have to release so much water everyday, so why not make power at the same time. After all, that is what the dam and lake are for. Not so osms can have water to play on.

I have to disagree with LTL on this one. APCO has only been running 1 turbine 2-3 hrs a day for the past three weeks and none on weekends.

I'm not sure why all of a sudden they need to be running 3 turbines for 5 hrs a day.

And please spare me the line that it is "their lake" -- I think we need a better explanation of the need to go to 476 (or lower). What about the intakes for Alex City city water needs?

Seems to me they should be in major conservation mode for the winter rains that may not come.

LTL:

How much rain have we had over the course of the past month or so --hardly any right?

OK - If we have hard hardly any rain, then why has the lake been at or right above 480 for this entire time? Guess because APCo has been releasing water downstream. True but at the the VERY VERY minimum, if any at all. As had they been releasing anymore the lake would still be dropping like a rock as was the case back in June and July as the rainfall in August has also been insignifcant to say the least.

My guess why the lake has once again begun to drop is increase water releases or power generation. One or the other for sure but most likely a combination of both.

As current water level is 479.85.

about 0.2 ft/day , as it has been since August 1. Logan Martin has dropped to 460.0 and has been holding for three days while Martin has begun dropping for the last 3 days. Tells me that APCo is going to hold Logan Martin at 5 feet below full and drain Lake Martin for awhile.

Interesting fact: The Corps of Engineers owns three dams downstream and generates its own power at those dams. Yet they can force APCo to release water so COE can run their generators downstream. COE sells its power to REA's etc. Strange coincidence ain't it.

Yall, nothing can be done about the good lord above and the lake. Take it easy.

Well I seem to remember that the Corps started to force Allatoona to increase their discharges, but only to a certain amount. Our decreases in drop correspond to Allatoona's releases. I can only assume that the maximum release has been reached over there. I don't know, but it seems reasonable to me. I am not privy to how many turbines run for how long at the dam. I can only assume you guys know a website that publishes such info. I really couldn't care less how long they run or how many. But I do know that it is not controlled at Martin Dam, but at HQ in Birmingham.

My most likely scenario is that they had an order for power to sell to the grid, at 10 to 100 times what they sell it to us for. Therefore increased generation was required to meet that demand. I am sure this will rile some feathers of some of you guys to find out they do this, but trust me they do. In fact APCO had its largest sales day ever this summer, in the midst of the drought. Imagine that. And I had a nearly a 50% increase over the same month last year.

We are all "suffering" this year. I have a couple of long term, very close friends who depend on the lake for their livelihood. They are really hurting this year. Fortunately they both have reserves to rely on, but I expect a few local businesses to not make it through the winter this year. That sucks. Yet Russell Lands, if we are to believe their propaganda, had the second best year ever. Some short term 'investors' are about to start selling off overpriced property. Oh well, maybe they should have been more reasonable with what they expected to gain.

It was stated earlier today that we are in a 10 year drought. That we haven't reached the 'average rainfall' in the past 10 years. All that tells me is it is time to adjust the 'averages'. Weather patterns change. I am reminded of something my Grandfather always said when asked "think its gonna rain? His answer was always the same.... "Always has". The rains will come, but until the 'rule' curve is changed, or the rules re-written about compliance with the rule curve, things are gonna stay about the same. Remember, they used to pull 50ft, then 30ft every year and still managed to fill it back up.

I am not trying to be argumentative, just stating things the way I see them. You and the leadership of the HOBO's are doing a GREAT job. Please keep it up!!! I am 100% behind you and think some other HOBO's could use you guys as an example to follow. I am also in favor of 485 winter pool, but we want see it this year. I hope for next year it will be in place.

LTL, I just agreed with everything you just wrote. I don't really remember what it was we argued about because lately I find myself wanting to say "amen" after some of your posts...War Eagle to you bro...

I dont hold it against you. You just jumped on a bandwagon that was being driven by..... well, you know who it was. My problem was with the way you talked about locals though. Water under the bridge now.

My sincere apologies sir. I got caught up with waging an anonymous war and hit a button I thought would be offensive. If we met you would quickly realize that I am nothing like the words I used and I don't intend to do so again as it can hurt feelings even if it is meant in jest. I do enjoy playful banter but when delivered through email the "tone" can certainly be worse than intended. With that said, you new how to "push buttons" to and were good at it :) The truth is I am just a good old boy myself. I hunt, fish, go to AU games etc...my best to you and I hope to meet sometime and buy you a beer. Its really much more my nature to like everyone than the reverse...sorry again...

Getting ready to head that way in a couple of hours! Peace my man!
