Our firm was recently hired by one of the parties involved in the spill in the gulf. It is absolutely astounding the amount of money and resources being applied to solve this problem. Regardless of what you hear in the media, all the parties are doing everything humanly possible to try to stop the flow of oil and deal with that already released. This is a tragedy but from my vantage point we will get through it and it will be cleaned up.

Sadly what will also happen is the parties will pay billions of dollars to the federal and state governments that will just go into the general fund and never result in a penny spent on restoration or cleanup. For the life of me I can't figure out why they need to not only pay all the private entities for their actual damages, pay to clean up the spill and then pay government much more money than the other two areas and for what? If there is a fine make them do a Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) so the money actually benefits the environment and not fatten the bank accounts of the government.

I believe that everyone is doing everything humanly possible, becasue it is inconceivable that they wouldn't. While the oil spill itself is bad enough, the lasting environmental damage is what worries me. Yes, they will clean it up but how do you put a price on impact to the wildlife and the wetlands? A representative from Audubon said it was the worst possible time for this to happen because of the migration and breeding right now.

Hound. There won't be any lasting damage at least in the very long run. There will be for some time but between the efforts of BP and natural degradation it will eventually be cleaned up. They said the same thing about the Exxon Valdez spill and within a relatively short time (a few years) there was no visual evidence of the spill. The gulf will cleanup faster because of the warm water and greater natural degradation than in cold water.

As for the animals they will likewise repopulate and under NRDA the responsible parties will pay a fine and have to do restoration. Not saying it's not a mess but I am confident it will be cleaned up. So far they have been fortunate that the weather and the dispersants have kept most of the spill off shore.

If I learn anything interesting from our work I'll post it. Say a prayer for the workers as they will be out working under adverse conditions. We are sending a boat out for 5 days to sample surface water.

Reading some of the Gulf Coast forums on the oil spill.
Some local government agencies actually seem to be holding back cleanup plans, waiting to see how much BP/etc is gonna' cough up to pay for it. Amazing.
However, the hay deployment method seems to be a serious alternative.
Whatever happens, the Gulf Coast has suffered another big hit. Bless their hearts, the real estate crash, hurricanes, economy crash, and now, no Red Snapper at all, and no oysters?? Shoot me.

Some of the Florida Gulf communities are starting to move hay onto the beaches.

We are also working with another wonderful resource. It's animal hair. Check out the facebook page "Birmingham donations for the Gulf" you will find videos on how this process works as well as information from the Mobile Bay area. He is a video demonstration. We had over 400,000 pounds of hair and Hanes sent 6000#'s of panty hose.
