Trying to keep this as a topic of conversation, and knowing that there isn't a need for them any other place on the lake (tic), I wonder what it will take to get them in the Stonebroke Summitt slough. Over 175 slips in about a half mile of shoreline along with docks longer than the limitations will make for some interesting weekends. Last year LEO Fuller watched the slough for a while, and one would have thought that barriers had been put up keeping folks from coming and going. The next day, it was like Grand Central Station for maniacs. People with permanent single family homes have long since stopped their kids and grand kids from getting very far from the bank while swimming. One beige pontoon boat from the Summit obviously has only one speed and that is Wide-a-- open. We are talking 30 feet from docks and even closer to people swimming. Believe me, with more and more sales at the Summitt, we will have more and more loonies on the water. Dismount Soapbox--

I hope the post catches someone's attention.  With more and more newbies on the lake, the situation worsens each year.   Was a time when there were 'quiet' sloughs, but no longer.  People need to learn that they should go to idle speed when they enter an area where there are homes, docks, etc.   The long-time owners at the entrance to this slough are afraid to let their grandchildren in the water in the summer because of the boaters speeding into the slough - and the wakes they cause throw not only boats up against docks, but people in the water also.

I think it depends on the width of the slough but if it meets the criteria I am not sure why they would not. Common courtesy does seem in short supply these days. In our slough we put up some personal floats out from our dock that have been left alone and keep the boats from coming too close to our swimmers. Seems to work OK and people stay outside them. You do have to be reasonable in the distance from your dock though. Ours is out about 20 feet or so. Have seen this in other areas as well and people tend to respect them. One thing that does bother me is when people in wider sloughs or even open parts of the lake complain about the wake from boats. That is just a fact of life living on a lake and it behooves them to design and construct docks for this eventuality. I am sure that's not the case here but I have seen people who live on wide areas of the lake screaming at boaters because of their wake. That to me is no different than people who build a home near an airport and then start to complain about airplanes. Boats make wakes and airplanes make noise.

Not disagreeing, just being nostalgic, I guess; as a 56-year Lake Martin enjoyer, it seems certainly true to me that a combination of greatly increased boat/PWC traffic and many many MUCH larger and more powerful craft than in "olden times" has combined to make the lake pretty unpleasant to ride on much of the time due to wakes (not to mention inexperienced boaters). A ride from our place down to the dam area past Kowaliga Marina has become an exercise is tooth-rattling, butt-breaking discomfort nowadays. It didn't use to be that way. My point being, I can sorta understand why every once in awhile ANY lakeside resident looking forward to some nice smooth water and peace and quiet would just snap under the relentless pounding. You have to enjoy your water well before 10 AM nowadays to enjoy the Lakeside that much. It has to be almost an emergency to get my bruised fanny and loose teeth into a boat after 10 AM nowadays.

Yep, back in the day. My first trip to LM was 57 years ago. I know change is bound to happen, but does it have to be so loud and disrupting? This year, I'm going over to Stonebroke and take my lawn chair, sit under one of the few trees left, and watch the "Comedy of Chaos" take place. (I won't be in my boat or within 50 feet of the water)

We would be more than happy to deliver videos to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources chief if anyone observes and videos a dangerous situation in/or around docks, sloughs, etc.  An effort is underway to resurrect the Proximity Regulation that would require idle speed within 100 ft. of a dock, another boat, or swimmer.  As a matter of fact videos would be the most convincing evidence anyone could offer.  You can email me from the forum.

This is a lot of horse hooey. 

If  you boat bangs against your dock,  learn how to three or four point tie it.  Or get a lift.

If you assgetssore get a bigger boat with a deeper V.

If your teeth get loose,  see a dentist.

You should watch you children when they swim and keep them out of harms way.

If you have grand children tell their parents to get their own lake house take the little brats there and watch them.

I have been seeing more and more people putting floats out to discourage boaters.   The air and the water belong to everyone.  And there are some people that don't like others telling them where they can and can't drive their boat or jet ski,  or where they can water ski,  and as I understand it you can't stop them.

If you don't like boats and wakes,  move to a lake that prohibits them.  It will never happen here.

You have to contact the marine police and fill out a petition form and if they have the time, they will observe and review your petition.  That would be the first step. Good Luck!

To qualify for No Wake Buoys you must meet one of the 3 qualifications below:
1. There is a public boat ramp / marina.
2. Public fuel pump access by boats.
3. The Marine Police has designated the area as dangerous.

If you can not say yes to any of the above 3, then you are out of luck.

The application process requires you to request a form from the MP, fill it out with a drawing attached, mail it to Montgomery, who then mail it to the Local MP post. It enters a black hole at this point, don't wait for a phone call.

There should be a number 4.  If this area was owned or developed by Russell lands, there would be a no wake. Look at the entrance, by water to their high in eating place, on the other end of the lake.

If I created the lake, I'd put buoys wherever I wanted them too. I have long speculated that "the bridge to nowhere" is actually going to be a toll road to enjoy and marvel at his burial tomb (that island looks like a pyramid, doesn't it?). They'll make a killing off that one, I'm sure. Hoping they put one of those penny flattening machines like they scatter all over Disney World so we can all prove we've been there.

It appears to me that they are desperate for cash. I have no direct knowledge, only hear the rumors, but their actions seem to reflect a company with little to no cash flow. Random decisions, and departure from almost everything that was once their philosophy. Maybe its some grand scheme we simple folk can't comprehend, but it looks like desperation and making the mortgage to me. I'm sure Ben is fine, personally, but it seems (to me, at least) that the company is having a yard sale to pay the water bill.

And country clubs don't make money. Are you saying they turn a million dollar profit off the members? If that's the case, I want better house brands, and send the beverage cart around every couple of holes! Maybe an ice cream stand on #12? If they're making a million off the members, I want it to be more like Shoal Creek. That's a club worth paying a premium for. Give me a caddie, AND a cart, and tell the Governor and Coach Chizik we'll let them through on #7. And The Crossroads? Even if both people who go there each week spend $100 a visit, it can't be making money? Has anyone ever rented a bike, or a kayak? How many $18 loaves of bread are they selling? Are they deeding those garden beds? What is the going rate for 40 square feet of potting soil and 8 cross ties, and how many units are available? And all these new cabins aren't pre-sold, are they? Why the sudden move to sell off property they said they would never sell, including cabins with established renters and waiting lists? Especially with so much in inventory in the developments that they haven't been able to sell? They've had buyers for most of those sites all along (the renters). But they're kicking out along County Line Road now, with the Ridge sitting there on one side, mostly unsold, Nichols Cove on the other, mostly unsold, and deeding the lots that once held renters in between? Lately it seems like they can't run people out fast enough to build a starter castle and sell it to somebody new. That rent is a reliable, monthly cash flow. Cash flow is what successful companies build, not shrink. The new cabins are deeded, not rentals. They're trading reliable monthly cash flow for a lump sum. Companies do that when they're growing, desperate, or shutting down. I don't see them growing, certainly not in this economy (do you?), and I don't think they're shutting down. Maybe I'm seeing it wrong, but as I said before, if they aren't hurting for money, they're sure doing all the things companies who ARE hurting for money do when they're trying to pay the bills. No concern for loyal customers, trade off the cash flow for a sudden chunk, pay the bill, and go on from there. JG Wentworth for corporations. Its my money and I want it now!

Who knows for sure. All I'm saying is their actions the last year and a half appear more those of a company struggling to generate cash, than a company with a plan and a comfortable financial position. I'm sure Willow Point does well, and the HOA fees are mostly profit, but look at their overhead. After paying the country club and maintenance staffs, they still have a lot of payroll to make. They have about 14 VPs of something or other in the main office. Each of those are probably making 6 figures. So the administrative overhead alone has got to be outrageous. Tom's salary may be 7 figures, and Ben's certainly is. The Crossroads has to be hemorrhaging cash. There are more people working at the Crossroads than the marinas, and they never appear to be busy at all. And what is the monthly payment on a $40,000,000.00 commercial loan (that's the number I've heard thrown about). Obviously, Ben has plenty of money (how much did he give to Children's Hospital? Wasn't it $25 Million?) Maybe he is floating the company, and maybe he is just cracking the whip on the office monkeys and they are reacting in a way that gives me that impression? Who really knows. All I know is what it looks like to me. And I have a feeling they are hurting for cash, much worse than any of us will ever know. The sudden sales of previous rental properties, in areas that are not part of current developments, when there is plenty of available inventory in those current developments, seems desperate to me. Maybe its just stupid, but I think there's more to it than just stupid.

you obviously have never run a business.  

you also seem obsessed with the fact that RL no longer wants to be in the rental business.  if you can call  it a rental business.  

the rent on one of those lots should be $10,000/ month based on the value of the property.  I don't blame RL for not wanting to let it go for $145.00/ month.

and who knows they may be right about people who would pay a million bucks for a lot would not want to be living next to people paying 145 bucks per month for 5 times as much land.

and if they want people shopping and eating at Crossroads they need to get the 1% in houses and get rid of the renters and the mill village houses.

$145 per month? As it was pointed out in one of these threads, the lots USED to rent for that much, to those who had signed on in the '50s and early '60s. When Tom came on board, ALL of the rents were raised, and the increases were the biggest for those who had had a cabin for the longest; more recent renters saw their rates jump, too, but since their initial rents were higher, the jump wasn't that much.

The first big increase was to $500 per bedroom; that was in 1999, prices for everything have been going up steadily since then, so you do the math. But $145? You're living in the dark ages if you think ANY Russell property is renting for that low.
