I know most of you live on the lake so I've been following the threads the last couple of days for info on water levels. My family is coming up the weekend before the 4th and staying in the bay pine island area so can somebody give some info at to where I should stay, water wise with skiing that I don't hurt any children. If you have any questions about the mobile bay area I'll be glad to give you info!

If you use Mobile Bay you are familiar with boating in 3 ft. of water. Only difference is, there it's mud, here it's rock, when you hit bottom-LOL.
Really, best bet is to get a Lake Martin Map locally that has contour lines for the lake. Stay well away from any buoys--there are no channel markers here--any buoy means danger--shallow water or no wake. Enjoy.

Thanks a lot. I figure once I get up there and see everything common sense will take over I just wanted to make sure nobody said "in bay pine island area you need to stay away from, etc.....
you forgot about the crabtraps in mobile bay though. i've spent hours at night before cutting them out of the motor.

Had a friend keeping his boat at my dock after Katrina--he'd just gotten her off the yard and was coming up the bayou to the house and picked up a mattress--got in both wheels. Had to get a diver.
At Bay Pines you're just off the river bed--130 feet deep--no crab traps.

Just be careflul going between the two big islands with the little one in between them. It is fine now, but we most likely wiil be several feet lower by then. But Bay Pine Island is definitely 'big water' which can make for rough skiing. Look for Manoy Creek, it is real popular with skiers. As you head south look for an island that has one tree on it toward your left side. The one tree has an American flag flying on it. It is right at the mouth of Manoy Creek in between Manoy and Madwind Creek. I put it there every year as a landmark for folks to find their way.
But don't go any further south because the next creek is Sandy Creek and it is so polluted you may get ecoli and DIE!! <sarcasm off>

Actually the greatest concentration of them was right beside Bay Pine Marina for years. All those travel trailers that were parked there when Ann had the place used drums, or most of them just buried a pipe straight into the lake. Neighbors complained for YEARS and had every agency in the known universe out trying to get something done. I think they are finally all gone now. Next time you are by there ask the manager, her name slips by me now, what the new owners had to do to get in compliance.
Of course this is all just made up off the top of my head because I obviously don't know cr@p.<pun intended> <sarcam off>

You'll be amazed at the clarity of the water. You can see down 6-10' depending on where you are.

Although I have been reading this forum for a while, I have not joined until now. However, I wanted to say "thank you" to "lLifeTime Laker" who puts the flag up on the island outside of the cut. I live in Manoy Creek and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I am proud that you do it, and we had bought a flag to put up if needed.
Now if everyone would throw a couple of trashbags in their boats to grab the garbage along the shore and in the water, we could clean this place up. We filled up about ten bags of trash without even trying this past winter. Every little bit helps.

I love Manoy also. I have been putting that flag there for 6 years and will continue to as long as I am able and my little tree holds up. The 'flag rasin' is an annual event eagerly anticipated each year by my friends and neighbors. We make a day of it. I usually try to do it Memorial weekend but went a little early this year because last years flag was completely gone. I am proud of the attention it gets. It has shown up on real estate home pages and tv commercials in Atlanta. :<)
I wouldn't mention picking up excess trash any more though. If you do you get called names.... like 'Christian Johnny Appleseed of Lake Martin trash'. <sarcasm off>
I think I just hit on nerve with some folks earlier when I mentioned that I do the same every time I go out. You see some folks like to sit back and threaten the local politicos with lawsuits and negative media attention that will accomplish nothing but allowing lawyers to buy bigger boats. They feel threatened by someone actually getting out and doing something constuctive that REALLY HELPS.

My advice is to stick to the middle part of the lake as much as possible. Most of the hazards are closer to the shore, and many of them will not have warning buoys on them because they are usually covered by several feet of water during the summer. I am thinking in particular about a rock near our cabin up past Real Island. This rock is probably about 50 yards offshore on a point, but you wouldn't know it was there unless you knew the lake at winter pool. I expect it to start grabbing props when the level drops to the 484 range. Water clarity will not be good on the weekends, either, so it will be harder to see a rock lurking just under the surface. Also, don't go too far back into the creeks. They are silted up at the 480 level in the backs, so you may think you are in deep water, but in fact it is much shallower. The area up Little Kowaliga by Little Steel Bridge is like that.
