WSMS posed a question on the " fishing " forum that I think applies to this forum because of the answer.

" Do any of the bigger marinas on the lake carry fishing supplies " to paraphrase. My question is " if they don't, why not? ". I know the answer but it will be interesting to hear what you all have to say.

They all know they could not compete with Jim's Bait shop for good prices and very friendly staff.

Yes the staff is friendly but the prices are sky high. He has his Rattletraps at 5$ and you can buy them all day at Wal-Mart for 3$. Walnut Hill has 20# bags of ice for 2.57 and Jackie has his priced at over 3$.

Compareing Wallnut Hill to Jims is fair, but Wallmart prices are well below anything on the lake. If you are willing to drive to AlexCity or Opelika or or or you will always find lower prices.

That's true and I always wait untill I have a good list so I can get everything in one trip, even my 6gal. gas cans for the mowers and my bass motorboat.

A couple of years ago, we put up a seperate building at our marina store and stocked it with all sorts of live and artificial baits and various tackle and fishing supplies. We advertised it in Lake Martin Living and in our store. Most of our investment in live bait that year died on us and we lost about 95% of our investment.

It should have been obvious to me that most fishermen trailer their rigs to the lake, buy their fuel, beer & ice at the corner service station, their tackle and artificial stuff at WalMart and their live bait at a local bait shop. Making another stop at a marina is just not in their plans.

The remaining few fishermen who live on one area of the lake do not provide a big enough customer base to support carrying much tackle or supplies, much less live bait!

Our talk of pricing got me to notice the price of gas on my small outing today. The price of gas at Store 34, the BP station and Wallnet Hill was 289 (they always seem to be the same) Hmmmm. The price of gas at Jims was 284. I purchase a lot more gas than I do ice.

Jim's is always a nickel cheaper than Walnut Hill. Added to the fact that Jackie actually seems to appreciate my business, I will continue to do all my local shopping there. Just one man's opinion.
