Pet peeve of mine. Has anyone else noticed the measley tips elderly couples leave the Oskars waitresses? Was there last night. There were 4 elderly couples at the next table. Three of the 4 "gentlemen", and I use that term loosely, left a $1.00 tip. That's $1.00 for probably a $20.00 tab. Several weeks ago an elderly man and his wife each had a meal, each had a dessert, and the man had 3 beers and you guessed it, a $1.00 tip. Man, if you can't afford a tip, eat at home. Sorry for the rant.

LOL, nice rant. I agree, elderly people do leave small tips. I think it has to do with their concept of the value of money, though. My first job was at a car wash and it was common to have little old ladies see me working out in the hot sun and for a tip they would give me a quarter and tell me to buy myself something to drink---drinks cost .50-1.00. Some of these people used to work all week for a couple of dollars or less. I think that they just forget how little a dollar is these days.

I guess my real rant is this 1 fellow can afford 3 beers at 2 or 3 bucks a pop but can't leave the young waitress but $1.00. Hold off on 1 of those beers fella and throw the $3.00 to the slave labor that has been so nice and attentive to you. Geeeeesss!

As a "older person", I think you are way too quick to generalize. I happen to be a generous tipper, primarily because all three of my kids worked as servers in restaurants at various times and were often "stiffed" by folks of ALL ages. You are right that the action is pathetic, but it is just as pathetic at any age and there are LOTS of poor tippers among the younger folks.

Tips depend SOLEY and wholy dependent upon the quality of service. Sorry, any idiot who "tips" out of some general population rule is himself an idiot. Granted, the service at Oskar's has always been stellar at worst.....waitresses that think they deserve a tip because they filled my tea glass once during a 30 minute meal is sadly mistaken. Rewards are for accomplishments. Remember that.

And the waitresses that do that often only do it just before bringing the check.

Sorry, but you're wrong; tips are an expected part of eating at a restaurant, and that is why waitrons are paid less than minimum wage, and are taxed by the government as if they received tips that were adequate compared to their total food sales. In fact, there are times that some waitrons open their paychecks and find that they OWE money, because their sales were high compared to their hours; though the checks reflect only the hours worked, the taxes reflect what they should have been paid if they were tipped the expected amount.

So if you undertip, you steal from the wait staff, a staff that makes less than minimum wage, remember. So don't be shocked when the waitrons give better service to the people who give better tips. And don't be surprised that they remember who the good tippers and bad tippers are.

Wow, musta struck a nerve. Was only commenting on my last 2 experiences at Oskars; did not mean to offend the elderly however, the people I observed happened to be older. As far as expecting a tip for poor service, dude, that never came into play. The couples I observed were attended to quite properly with friendly, efficient service. The guy who had the 3 beers never had to wait for his bottle to go past the half empty level before he was asked if he would like another. And for her effort, she got $1 for a $30.00 tab. Pathetic.

Thanks for your thoughts, but, I stick by mine. The fact that gratuities have become an integral part of dining out wasn't by my design. I think it's "pathetic" to pay someone a substandard wage to begin with. You are inviting substandard achievement. Why do you think unions have been big in this country? (that's another topic of conversation). The most fabulous restaurants where I live pay their waitresses a good base salary...and the service is...from "the base" GREAT......and the tips follow suit. You won't win this argument with me.

Yes , I have noticed that elderly people do leave very small tips. And that's OK depending on how their lives are going. Have you ever been behind an elderly couple driving and become impatient? You know you are going to be old yourself pretty soon. --What's the matter with you? Why not be patient with these folks and apprecieate the contributions they have made to our society? Ever have to live on social security? We have to respect our senior citizens........ Sorry for MY rant...

So you only do things when they are of "your design?" No you don't. You drive on the right side of the road even if you like the left hand better, because that's the design; to go against it is foolish. And so even though you didn't design the plan that pays waitrons less than minimum and taxes them as if they were tipped the accepted rate, but by eating at restaurants you accept that plan. If you don't like the plan, the voice your displeasure by eating somewhere else; that's certainly more honorable than stealing from a waitress. (And that's what you are doing-- stealing. Because even though you undertip, she is taxed as if you didn't, and she pays the difference.)

As for the "finer" restaurants where you live-- how many of them are seasonal, and need to do an entire year's worth of business in three months? I'm guessing zero; different circumstances call for different measures.

I'm sure you won't admit to losing this argument, but that doesn't change the fact that you're a greedy self-important you-know-what who isn't worthy to kiss the feet of the hard-working people (waitrons, civil servants, and the like) that you probably consider your own personal slaves. What a disgusting example of a sub-human rich redneck. Feel free to go somewhere else-- and stay there.

Has never had substandard service from Oskars. So, since you don't like the system, just continue to steal from 18 year olds. Pathetic.

I agree with deepdiver's points. Poor service should lead to poor tips. If a waitress/waiter just brings the food and brings the check, they will only get 10% tip from me. I typically reward good service with 20% or more tip. I do feel that you should leave something, regardless of the service.

I can't really comment on service at Oskar's since I've never been there. The best service I've seen around the lake is at Niffers, and the worst I've seen is JR's in Alex City.

I felt I should add...for those questioning my integrity....that I have, many times, tipped MORE than my entire bill. But, I firmly believe rewards come from effort....
