A young neighbor and his wife has a dog that was an inside dog. The couple has a new baby. Now the dog is outside on a line that is about 50 ft from the house.. The dog is barking and crying all the time.

What advice would you give to the couple?

1.  Build a fence.
2.  Get another dog.  Dogs are social beings and if there is another dog in the yard the once-inside dog will have something to replace the companionship it enjoyed pre-baby.

We adopted an Irish Setter from the All-Florida Setter Rescue League.  The dog had been turned in to the pound, adopted, then turned in to the pound again an "unmanageable".  We found out later that the dog had been left alone inside a privacy-fenced yard all day....Irish Setters are very active and the boredom just got to her.  We had several other dogs at the time but wanted a Setter and adopted her...she turned out to be the most lovable, loyal, scatterbrained animal one could imagine....and with at least two other dogs to keep her company we didn't have a bit of trouble with her.

I'd ask them how they would feel if someone ousted them from their home, put them outside and separated them from their family. Now that I'm done with my rant, I would say that they should consider re-homing the dog; or getting a companion dog, or bringing the dog back in the house. I never really understand people who have a baby and immediately feel the need to oust their animals. Recent studies have shown that kids who grow up with animals have fewer allergies as they grow up.

I thaught I would have to give up my chow when my first child came along. Not the case . She mothered and protected both of my children - never biting either 1.Give the dog a chance , the new will wear off that baby soon enough !

You are right. To a dog, it is just another valued member of the pack. The pack takes care of its own.
