I have a new Garmin Nuvi 760 GPS highway navigation system. Does anyone know of a card that I can insert into this product for navigating Lake Martin? Thanks.

You can go tot he Garmin site and follow the links to maps. Depending on your unit, you need either a Garmin card or a std SD card. The Inland Lakes card has several zone, one of which is Southeast and it has Martin on it. Costs about $120 for either one. There is a chart that shows whether you need SD or Garmin data card if you don't know.

Spend the $120 on gas and learn your way around the lake. It will be MUCH more enjoyable and satisfying. Trust me it is not THAT hard. If you learn a half dozen landmarks and their realtionship to each other you can navigate the entire lake, day or night.

You would have a hard time learning Blue Creek on $120 worth of gas. There is nothing wrong with using a GPS if you are a newbie. Welcome to the lake my friends. Please ignore any comments from LTL. He learned the lake in a john boat with a trolling motor. If you don't have that kind of time the GPS might be a good option.
I learned the lake the old fashioned way and run it wide open at midnight but I got lost many times at night in the early days. Stick to daylight hours for a while but whenever you make the jump to night driving the lake WILL look different. The GPS would be a nice backup even for LTL after dark and 20 Old Milwaukess...

What I hate is dumb people, and bob ios at the top of that list. If yo can't learn Blue Creek on $120 worth of fuel, you must be dumb as a stump!! I have owned several different types of boats, but a John boat is NOT on that list.
Here is a challenge for you Bob. You can pick me up, blind fold me, take me anywhere you wish on the lake. Take off the blind fold and within just a very few minutes I will know where I am and which way is home. The ONLY exception is fog, but then again I wouldn't go out on a foggy night, even with GPS.

Watch out Bob! I here that LTL likes to be tied up, blinfolded and taken out on the lake at night by other men. Don't be surprised if he asks if you have some vaseline. Sorry LTL your taken cheap shots so I might as well jump on board with Lakeman.

Having an opposing opinion is NOT taking cheap shots. The crap that he who shall remain nameless (till he is stupid enough to jump in, which is often) is taking cheap shots. Why lower yourself to that standard? I can take a joke just as well as I can dish one out, which is pretty darn good, just ask CAT, but HWSRN isn't intelligent enough to keep up.
Tied up and taken out on the lake at night. HAHA

Most places that sell them will download the lake for you for $25. Thats what I did. It works great !!

I like gps. I use it for golf, fishing, hiking and many other uses. I can use celetial navigation loran etc. But on the lake I carry a gps. It is relatively old but works for marking fishing holes, checking boat speeds etc.
About 4 years ago I was at the 4th of July firworks show and trying to get back to the river bridge. There was quite a thunderstorm and it was obvious that many people were lost. You could not see the bowlight on the front of your boat. But I was able to follow my gps line home.
I still don't know how the gps was able to function in those conditions, as it has failed with much less cloud cover. And like LTL it does not always work in the fog.
It is just another fun gadget to have.
LTL I learned the lake in days of old with the guy from Sylacauga, who drove the red twin sister to the Golden Phantom. Do you know what ever really happened to that old boy and the suitcase of money?

I am totally in the dark with driving twins and suitcases of money. No clue what you are talking about, but am very curious as to what you are talking about.
As for GPS, I use it all the time, it is called Go Places by Sight!!

You might start at the website for the card support your Garmin uses (i.e. c-map, Navionics, etc.
I think Garmin uses their own proprietary technology in their cards. According to the info I have from West Marine the unit you have uses the SD card type. Also according to my info the Garmin card #010-C0894-00 looks like it might have Lake Martin. I would give Garmin a call and verify or ck their website.
We have a Navman chartplotter on our boat and were able to get a nice card with Lake Martin data. It works great. Some of them don't have depth contours so watch for that. If they use USGS data it may not have contours.

Some Garmins use proprietary Garmin data card, if your's uses SD card, you have more options.010-cd506-00 is the Garmin card part number for the lake, but they have the same thing on SD on the Garmin site.
The discussion thread is interesting and I too learned the parts of the lake I know via sight and a map and practice. It's fun and an interesting way to relive the weekend during the week as I lay in bed looking at the map. I did find that other boat drivers in my family benefitted from being able to use saved tracks in the GPS to get from one place to another and, I still consult it when I'm going into areas with unfamiliar water levels, or lots of switch-back coves and such. It helps give the confidence to do more of the experiential learning, but it certainly isn't the only way.

I use my GPS to navigate at night on the lake. Having grown up in AC i am familar with the lake but I have set tracks on my GPS into main tributaries on the lake and can follow the little red line on the GPS home or to many other locations. It was especially usefull last year with the lake down to keep me away from known sandbars and other obsticles. Like flying IFR. Just a safety issue to me.

If any of you have any GPS #s of sandbars or other shallow water hazards, please post them on my blog below by entering a "reply" or comment. I am trying to create an information resource. So far I have exactly zero. Hopefully that will change when I get out on the lake with my GPS, but if any of you have any, please help!!
