Bomb-proof tunnel with air conditioning: Obama's security go to extraordinary measures for his tour of the Gandhi museum

    • American warships to patrol off Mumbai during visit
    • Coconuts removed from trees as a precaution
    • 250 U.S. business executives with Obama on 'biggest ever trade mission'
    • $200million Asia trip cost denied but the President will have huge entourage

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle arrived in India's commercial hub of Mumbai on Saturday, days after voters punished his Democrats in mid-term elections.

Probably not since the days of the Pharaohs or the more ludicrous Roman Emperors has a head of state travelled in such pomp and expensive grandeur as the President of the United States of America.

While lesser mortals – the Pope, Queen Elizabeth and so on – are usually happy to let their hosts handle most of the security and transport arrangements when they venture beyond their home shores, the United States creates a mini-America on the move to ensure that nothing is left to chance.

Lot, -I'm usually in step with you. -...and I believe the extent and cost of this trip needs a little sunlight...especially if it's anywhere near the number of people and dollars that have been thrown out there for ridicule. -However, I can't believe that you believe your last statement above, that we should place faith in the security of host countries. Granted, we should work with them. Granted, we must respect that they will give their best. But depend on them? ...we must do all that we can possibly/reasonably do to ensure our president's safety! ...period!

I agree with you on the security part. I never want our President to be removed other via the ballot box. Being able to be a public official without fear for safety and without threats that impact national decisions cannot be compromised.

I think it's strange that the President would take his children in areas of the world where security is extremely difficult to manage. This part of the world is not safe for vacations at this time.

Considering our financial situation at this time, I think that traveling in such grandeur is not necessary for business. This same business was probably already agreed to via private business energy before the President's visit..

Agreed.  I'd bet most of any negotiating has already been completed.
This trip looks more like  photo ops and showmanship than real work.  Timed to turn attention away from the election results.
I am anything but an Obama supporter, but gotta give them credit, it is a shrewd move.

The quote came from India and it may have been misquoted.  200M rupees at the current exchange rate is ~$4.6M per day.  Still a lot of money but now in the believable ballpark.

what needs light and air is the export package that he has laid on their table.    I wonder what technologies we have agreed to let them have in order for them to "buy American".   Companies tend to be very short sighted when making exports, and for every export/import situation, there is usually an "overseas jobs or technology" quid pro quo.  So what may look like a good thing in the short term, may actually cost more American jobs in the long run.  And then there is the question of who else they will share it with.  India has a relationship with China.    Which is why we want a relationship with India.

India is actually very sophisticated, unlike Pakistan or some of these other countries.  I would put their shrewdness on a par with the Europeans.

I'm glad someone finally cleared up the $200M a day rumor.  Just goes to show you that the right media doesn't check their facts any better than what most of you think the "liberal" media does.  Believe half of what you hear.

I have always assumed that being a devout Catholic, you have a direct line to the Pope, whereas, I merely have an indirect line to the messiah. Could you ask the Pope, if in the interest of calming down those wing nuts who resent the expense of providing the security that the President requires and deserves on foreigh trips, if he would be willing to "LOAN" , not rent, his Popemobile to the messiah for his next foreign trip?????? This would go along way in cutting down the $200 million per day expense that the wing nuts are throwing around. It was really some Indian who threw out the number and it is one of those myths that wing nuts have a tendendy to believe and post. At least you, did mention it was not exactly in US dollars.

    Purpose of Obama's Trip

    1. "Get out of town" after the Nov. 2 election - "They did not beat us - They just outscored us"
    2. Convince India to accept an increase in the number of Indians employed by US corporations as technical advisors, etc and convince Americans it's OK when Democrats outsource jobs.
    3. Announce sales to India that had already been negotiated and had nothing to do with his trip.
    4. Return with his children to his place of birth as the "Emperor Obama"
    5. See if he will be missed after 10 days
    6. Talk about a "mid course" correction outside the USA.
    7. Be out of the country when Nancy is selected as the minority leader
    8. They're painting the bedrooms in the WH
    9. The family dog has never traveled outside the USA
    10. Announcement of a "secret contribution" from Keith O. by MSNBC

GF - These reasons above are about as baseless as some of the comments that you make about the "wing nuts". It's not about the $200M: the 40 ships; or the special tunnel built to the museum. It's about the extravagant lifestyle that he has practiced since becoming President. This leader is immune from setting examples for American citizens.

You and your fellow wing nuts dislike everything he says, does, and stands for. If he traveled by bus you would say he is denegrading the presidency. He is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. It is a no win situation so he might as well live it up in the style of a Republican.

I said from the outset that the number made no sense to me but was reported by an Indian news agency who so far as I can tell has not printed a retraction.  What I think is really sad is that with the Messiah, people could actually believe it was true.  And bear in mind I am just conjecturing about the rupee versus dollar mixup for no other reason than that number makes more sense.  I just wish the WH would put an end to this and tell us what the trip is actually costing.

As for the Popemobile suggestion I am sure the Holy Father, out of Christian charity would be glad to help.  The real question is whether Obama could get his head inside.......we know his ego would never fit.  :-)

Hound, I was just guessing that the mixup was between rupees and dollars as the rupee figure actually makes sense.  But so far as I can tell the Indian news agency that forst printed it has not issued a retraction.  But I htink you are on the right track about the real cost of this trip.

The kitchen got too hot... heat could not stand the heat (despite the fact that he's wearing no clothes).

This is known in the psychology world as "displacement behavior."

GF, you are going too far with this post.  For example, if after January 1st Obama said, "I am resigning the office of the Presidency effective immediately and am skipping over the VP because he is a complete moron and am appointing  Speaker of the House Boehner to the office", I would agree with what he said.  :-)

Besides, don't blame us if he doesn't say anything much that we can agree with.  We don't write his teleprompter script.....
