Someone please comment on whether or not it is permissable to cut visable stumps in the water. There are a few that I would like to remove that are just under the water line during normal winter pool levels and I believe that chopping them down a little will make winter travel safer (there will still be plenty for the fish).

I have hacked a few over the past two winters. The main thing to remember is when you get past the outer layer, those things are almost as hard as rocks. I am going to just burn them out this year.

Good point - only viable removal options are burning, pulling or explosives. Not only are they hard, they are basically solidly soil impregnated. Might as well run a saw on concrete as one of these.
