Just called Advanced Diposal and was told that the decision was made 26 Sep to discontinue seasonal service to lake residents. I don't know if Jackson's Gap is served by another provider. I'm mulling over my options. Any thoughts?

We had several weeks that we weren't picked up. I called the hame officeabout credit and they promised me I would recieve two weeks credit. Also the was an insert in the bill stating that Advanced had bought Sunflower and Arrow and that pickups would return to normal. I guess this is contracted through the county commissioners??????????????? It would probably help to show up at the meeting Monday morning or call your commissioner about it.

I have had nothing but issues since they came into play. They do not pick up regularly despite I pay regualrly. Even during summer.....being a partimer, I have left and returned 2-3 weels later and still no pickup. You can imagine the smell. I call, get a "I am sorry," and it still happens again. To make things worse, when I put additional containers out of garbage because my SF container was full from the previus non pickup, they would not pick up the additional containers because they did not belong to Sunflower.

I think HOBO's should assist with this. Even though not lake related it still is a detriment to the community.

I just double-bag, throw in the back of the pickup and bring home. I can't justify the expense being a part-timer.

The trash situation adds to the general garbage situation in and around our communities. I used to live on Manoy Creek, and many of the full-time (not always on water) people could not afford the trash service. The result was dumping all over the place including in the water. Take a ride around those roads off Lafayette and Madwind. Unbelievable. This is a lake problem (and one the hobos should consider tackling). Not everyone has the option to bag and carry trash out. Lots of folks are left with no alternative but to dump trash wherever they can. Sad, inexcusable, but true. Shows you what happens when a monopoly gets a hold of a needed community service.

I live in Manoy Creek and have for over 7 years and have NEVER seen the "dumping all over the place including the water". And how do you know these people can't afford trash pickup. Someone in this thread stated they couldn't 'justify' the expense being part time. Others can't justify but folks in Manoy can't afford?

I have NEVER, I repeat NEVER seen ANY dumping in Manoy Creek. Is there trash there, yes on occasion just like EVERYWHERE else, but I find more on big water than in the creek.

Are there dead end dirt roads that some folks use as dumps? Certainly, but that is NOT a Madwind Road Laffayette Street problem, that is an Alabama problem. You can pick ANY dirt road in Alabama and drive it and see the same thing. Even dirt roads in whatever area you live in now. There are 'off water' folks in my neighborhood and EVERY ONE of them have trash pick up. It is not us dumping on those roads, it is folks that come from other areas because of the abundance of dead end roads which is the preference for illegal dumping becuase of the decreased likelyhood of being discovered.

The bottom line is Sunflower Waste is not providing the service it is contracted and paid for. Litter, however it gets there, is not productive.
I do not think anyone suggested that this is a personal attack aginst people in your area. That being said Sunflower is not helping the matter by making it worse.

I know it's an Alabama problem (probably rural everywhere problem) that people dump trash (and deer carcasses, and unwanted pets) in any remote area they can get to handy. When I lived in Manoy Creek, though, I couldn't afford trash pick up. So I packed my trash up and tried to take it to a dumpster. True story--should probably go under most embarrassing moments post---a trash cop came out from behind the dumpster and gave me a ticket for trying to dump in a dumpster. I know the folks in Manoy aren't the only ones with this problem. It was an example based on personal experience, not an accusation against anyone or any specific place. I just think we all should try to get a handle on our shared community garbage responsibility, even if that means helping out people who don't have alternatives.

Your point on trash dumping is well taken. The problem of garbage dumping is really not the fault of the garbage collector--in most cases. I have seen a Sunflower truck flying down Hwy 34 with garbage and boxes flying out the top because they did not close the hopper as they should. The real issue is enforcement. The Sheriff of each county is the enforcement agency for littering, and they need assistance from citizens who see dumping. Even a few fines will get the word around and the cleanup could begin. This is not a matter wealth, it's a matter of caring about your neighborhood--and many don't.

As far as garbage pick up contract enforcement, anyone can call the Tallapoosa County Commission with complaints of service. Someone posted a phone number recently that you could call--maybe they could re-post.

The HOBOs will look into the situation. There are HOBO members at most County Commission meetings, so we should be able to find out the best approach. Remember, all dumpsters in Tallapoosa County are private, I believe. Back in the 70s and early 80s the county placed dumpsters around in certain spots--what a nightmare that was.

I have done this. If you see a bunch of trash or trash bags on the side of the road in your area. Put some gloves on and dig in, looking for mail with an adress and turn it over to the Sheriff Dept. with your complaint and they will make contact with that individual and have them clean it and if they refuse they will be fined and jailed and forced to clean it.
