We would like to rent a small boat, or a wave runner for memorial day weekend. Are there any places on the north end of the lake, with rentals available? Thanks.

River North Marina used to rent pontoons. I am not aware of anything else up on this end for rent.

Maxwell/Gunter Rec Area does if you are active duty or retired. If not, Sonny Fomby.

Stay away from Sonny Fombys.. We rented a pontoon for about 7 guest in 2007 and the boat had holes in the pontoons. Boat started sinking when we were near the rock. All the seats started floating, deck went totally under, cell phones and food was ruined. Embarrasing weekend as our guest left early and our plans were ruined. Sonny Fombys didnt bring us a new boat out after we were towed in and acted suprised that we wanted a refund. Never once offering a refund and hardly an apology if ever one at all. Stay away!

....started to sink after you rented it. Could it be that you HIT something that caused the 'holes' in the pontoons? I know several folks who have rented from Fomby's and have had exellent service. I doubt I would say I was sorry if you sank my boat either.

Yeah man, my father sank the boat , when he left the dock we were never in shallow water from that point. I guess we hit a floating rock. Speak when you have something intelligent to add until then Get Lost or grow up!

They put a hole in it in the shallow area they were storing it in. They admitted it moron.

We are all waiting for LTL's reply.. His first instink and I do mean stink is to accuse and berate even when he does not have a clue (most of the time) of the circumstances

It is still kinda funny to me that the 'holes' happened at their dock, but it only started sinking at the rock. I don't know your Dad, he could be qutie capable of sinking a boat for all I know. I still have to wonder why it didn't sink at Fomby's pier since that is where you claim the damage occured. And you are ABSOLUTELY right, nobody hit ANY underwater obstacles last year with the lowest levels that have been seen in 60 years.

...that with hundreds or thousands of incident free rentals, everybody else should stay away because you had a bad expiereince. My best freind spent his first day ever on Lake Martin with one of Fombys rentals. I say with, not on, because within an hour of renting for the day, someone ran over a rope. He spent the next 5 hours with the PWC upside down in the water removing rope from the shaft. I guess that was Fomby's fault too. He should go and get his refund I guess, instead of still contunuing to do business with them.

I just know that they wanted folks out on the lake sinking in one of their boats. They probably try to arrainge it at least once a month. Seeing as how none of their equipment is more than 3 or so years old I can see where it probably was overdue to be sank. Is dear ole Dad coming back this year?

I dont have the patience or time to argue with you man. The boat had a pinhole in the pontoon, they agreed it had probably already been filling up before we got on it. Besides that the boat we reserved was old and unattractive but we reserved it over the phone. The big problem we had with them was when they came to pick us up at the Ridge Marina and didnt bring us a replacement boat then acted unprofessional about giving us our money back, never offering to do so and acted suprised we asked for a refund. They need to be inspecting boats before they send families out on them. Luckily for us there was another couple on a pontoon across the lake that saw our boat sinking and rushed over to assist pulling everyone off. It was a hellish experience!

Also let me say this, you make this forum site very hard to paticipate in and trust me NOBODY WANTS YOU HERE! Please go away.

I have been doing business with the Fomby's, off and on, for 3 years and have never had a bad experience with them. They have always been extremely courteous, competent and professional. --Very good people.

They maybe good people but there business skills need a major overhaul, from boat inspection, updating of rentals to customer service. As a business owner myself, I could of almost understood the bad service part of it until I learned that he ran the place and was the son. We wanted it to be a good experience due to the fact there store is so close to our lakehouse but I wouldnt send my worst enemys to rent a boat from them.
Maybe in the future when they update their fleet and hire new management. I'm not the type to speak down on someones business but I would not be doing my part not to warn people.

We have been doing business, almost exclusively, with the Fomby's since we moved up from the coast, in 2001. The only exception was when the boats or jet skis needed repairs under warranty. Fomby's quality, service, mechanical aptitude, and pricing is the best. Their fleet, if not brand new, is nearly new. The Fomby's I know make every reasonable effort to assure customer satisfaction. They have even come to the house to make minor repairs, assist with a battery changeover, or get a rope off the shaft. Quality people, with quality offerings. You need look no further.

I rented from Sonny Fomby before I owned a house on the lake, After he died, I rented from the boys. They are responsible people with a good reputation around the lake. The incident you mentioned does not sound like them but indeed must have occurred. I must have also been a unusual situation; their facilities and equipment are very well maintained and their customer service in my dealings with them has been exemplary.

This does not make a bit of sense; a pontoon with a "pinhole" does not sink as rapid as you make this sound. Sounds like the boat hit something after it was taken out, if it only had a pinhole it should have been noticed the boat was sinking long before things on the boat were getting wet and you had to be rescued, if it in fact only had a Pinhole" the boat should have been returned long before things got wet and they had to be "rescued".

Glad somebody else ses it. I was away from the computer and jsut read the rest of the thread. IF is was filling that slow, as a pinhole would I would think somebody would notice. And I didn't hear a word about listing so I assume both pontoons got pinholes.

Droughtbuster, just because you had a bad experience does NOT MEAN they are bad folks, or business people. All you had to do was relate YOUR experience, not speak so lowly of them.

As for me going away, NOT GONNA HAPPEN. It is jim and lakeman, aka the racist pair that ruined this thread and this forum. Don't believe it, go over to the Off Topic forum and search 'lakemans challenge', that is where he challlenged me to "prove" he ever made racist posts and I did.

Guys, you dont have to believe me! However, thats unfortunate that you dont. Let me say this, the son, while driving us back to our house, admitted that the low water conditions were taking a toll on their pontoon boats. He also said that the small hole had probably been taking in water before we actually boarded with our family. You then add 7 or 8 people and a cooler of food and ice and a heavy water logged pontoon and what will eventually occur. Sinking. Remember from the time we left Fombys we never the left the center of the channel all the way to the Ridge area. Just passing the story along for those that care. Let me add, my Dad and I are on our 4th large boat over 30 years with never an accident in the water. Knock on wood!

thanks

reread my post - I said it did not sound like them but it must have happened. I was accepting your facts as offered and adding my opinion that it was most likely an isolated incident based on my history with them and their overall good reputation.

We have rented from them off and on over the years and the equipment and service was fine. Sorry that Droughtbuster had a bad experience but I would not stay away from them as it doesn't sound to me like their usual service. It was a bad summer for everyone last year and maybe they were feeling the financial pinch and reacted badly.

Martiniman, that was probably very likely the case. I'm sure they'll do a great business this year. I say if you've had good experiences keep going back ,but ,as far as my family goes, you will never get the women in my family back on their boats. The kids will never forget it! We will be doing it again in a month or so and are going to give the Cove a shot.

You talking trash about a local business that I have NEVER heard a bad word about is not BASHING? I guess it is ok because it is you. After rereading the thread it is the more noticable that it was NOT Fomby's fault, yet you say they apoligized anyway. Sound to me like they did customer service over and above the normal. I am sure they probably did admit it was their fault just to shut you up. But as was pointed out, IF it was a pinhole why did it EVER become an issue of having to be 'rescued'. If your saintly father knew anything of boating he would have known long before there was ANY danger of sinking that something was wrong. I have been on a pontoon that was taking on water, it is impossible for even the least competent not to notice. I also purchased a new pontoon boat that had a factory defect in one of the welds and had a pinhole. First time we launched we ran all weekend, left it at the pier and got a call 3-4 days later that it was listing bad. I still drove it to the ramp and took it out with one tube half full of water.

I still say you or your father hit something. I am sure you will NEVER admit it, but those with common sense know it.

I only responded to the info in his posts. How can you go from Barrons Bridge to the Rock with pontoon taking on water to the point of sinking and NOT know it. Try it sometime. I have done it so I do know 'something' of it. I have also done business with Fombys so I know 'something' of them too. I am a lot of things, but hypocrit aint one of them.
