Do things calm down after the 4th of July? It sounds like LM is a little crazy right now. We will be down for the week following the 4th, should I expect massive crowds of irresponsible boaters, or does the festive spirit tend to end with the 4th of July.

Marine Police - I will be bringing my 18ft bowrider from Lake Pontchartrain in Metairie LA. Is there anything else we need to be legal on Lake Martin besides; life jacket for everyone, throwable flotation, fire extinguisher, engine cut-off tether, horn/whistle? 12 years old and under must wear PFD, is this the same in LM? Am I required to get any kind of permit for a 1 week visit?

The week after the 4th is normally pretty quiet. We usually take our vacation the week after the 4th and there are times during the week when it is like we have the lake to ourselves.

some places might be more crowded than others, but our area is like heaven on earth - I can hardly wait.

I will say that normally on the 4th and (since the 4th falls on Friday), Saturday and Sunday will be a zoo - so we stay close to home and do not venture out too far - but the following week tends to really make up for it.

It should be nice and quiet the week after the 4th. I believe Alabama requires you to have your permit from your home state for boating = whatever they require. Stop in a Marina when you get here and they will give you all the info you need. Also , don't forget to clean out your bildge well before you arrive so we don't get any weird critters or invasive aquatic plants from Lake Pontchartrain. Thanks.

It reads like you have it covered. Check out the attached link for good info on regulations. You are fine with a boat registered "out of state" without any paperwork what so ever, up to 45 days a year, maybe? Obviously, bring your LA DL, road drivers license, I mean. I have a place on LM and live in GA, for now. When I registered the boat in AL because it lives there now, they looked at me like I was crazy and didn't need to register there. I gave up a 10 year boat registration in GA for one in AL that expires in August 2008, LOL. In addition, I took the AL Boaters License exam on line, and the Marine police told me to just save it till I moved and got my AL DL. So, with the equipment you listed, you are good to go. Oh yeah, drive with your eyes wide open. As on every body of water I have ever navigated, most folks don't know the rules of the "road" on water, or choose to ignore them. If you do know the rules, be prepared to give way a lot when you shouldn't have to. Last weekend, I saw a pontoon with the red and green bow lights reversed and on the wrong side.

Anyway, Lake Martin is one of the finest bodies of water in the world. Prepare to enjoy yourself!

Just be sure and pull your bumpers inside your vessel when underway. But I'm sure you know that.
