On page 15 of the June issue of Lake magazine, I noticed that Alabama Power has a full page advertisement featuring a kid on a rope swing with the caption "Brought to you, in part, by Alabama Power."  Seems rather ironic since I understand Alabama Power has removed all rope swings on their property.  I know the one here in Sandy Creek is gone, tree and all.

I did notice that.  Guess that rope swing was on private land.  APCo's lawyers can't take the risk on their property.

Regardless, there are rope swings,,, "here and there". Mention them and,, presto,, they're gone.

I guess we're supposed to feel good about APCo because they keep water in the lake and let our kids swing on ropes.....except if they are on APCo property. In a way I can't blame them in this litigious world. I can see some lawyers kid breaks an arm so he or she sues because APCo allowed a rope swing on their property. Happens all too often these days where personal responsibility is a thing of the past.

that APCo can and does use the activity for their ads, but cut down rope swings from their property.  The only own about 250 miles of shoreline.  I understand their problem, but remember, they also own chimney rock.

Maybe Alabama Power will hire some explosive experts to demo The Rock into the lake.  If done on the 4th this would give folks a choice on fireworks shows...Russell's or APC's.  However, this sudden rise in lake level brought about by this spectacular event would probably flood the farmer's land downstream in the floodplain, thereby bringing on more lawsuits.  I wonder why they call it floodplain?

We found a good one near the rock yesterday.  Hope it stays.

Is there a way to build one safely?  I grew up swinging on one at Six Mile Creek.  Got a few injuries and was ok, but I would hate for a grand child to get injured.  Seems that all swings from the bank have rocks, roots, etc under them.  One slip and ...  I have a kinda sorta decent spot for one from the bank, and was wondering if putting a huge tube or two on the bank would add some security.

Russell Lands owns Chimney Rock, hence the Bridge to Nowhere, which connects Rattlesnake Ridge and Chimney Rock Island. Of course, this only makes sense to those who understand that Chimney Rock is NOT the place where people congregate to jump; that's Acapulco Rock.
