HP HQ  Have you been told how much $ the poker run made. Looks like we had a good number of players

Rumor has it that it was over 250,000 raised for charity, with a singular donation of 50,000 from Kenny Armstrong! There were over 500 hands sold, was just a killer turnout! lazer light show, fireworks, catered meals, was just a great time by all! What I was surprised about was how clean the lake was, you hear how nasty it is but when you have visibility 10 feet down, that ain't bad. I sure wish lake Martin would open their doors for an event like this, huge opportunity that's going to waste. Also not a single accident of any sorts, not one!

Official results are that 280k was raised towards charity! Found that out via Powerboat Nation about 5 this afternoon. Would be a fabulous to be able to do something like this for needy organizations around here!

We are actually talking about both, but no one will chime in on the Martins run.

I for one have lived on Lake Martin for over 20 years. Heard the term, have not a clue what is involved. I am probably not alone.
What is a Poker Run? What is the purpose? What is the process? Why is it fun? Special boat??
It is obviously a very popular event on other lakes, and it apparently generates a lot of money for local charities and business.
"Splain" this Poker Run to the ignorant among us??

Why should you have to condition the success of an event on the fact that there were no accidents (or to put it in more southern terminology, "no one was killed").  Not trying to be sarcastic, but just noting that most events on the water are always assessed in this manner.

In a poker run like the one on Martin...We registered at the Ridge and received our first Playing Card. Then made our way to River North to get the Second Card and a Pirate Flag. Then onto Blue Creek Marina for the Third Card and a Pack Pack Bag. Then we go to Real Island Marina to get the Fourth Card and a cozy. The final stop was at Kowaliga Marina for a T shirt and 5th Card.. At this point you walk over to Kowaliga Restaurant and get your meal and a chance to open the treasure chest with a key they gave you at the first stop. If you want you can buy and additional card to improve your hand for $25. after the dinner they judge Costumes and announce the winner of the Poker Hands.

By the way I have a few photo's on My Lake Martin Event Pics Facebook Page if anyone is Interested and on  this Link.

AU, the reason for the " not a single accident" remark is because most folks think that events like this are dangerous and that nothing good can come out of them. But the reality is that great things come from these events ranging from money towards charities, friendship, meeting people with common interests, going places that you have never been, etc.

Oh...and no specific kind of boat is required....and ALL Boat owners got along as far as I could tell...Very enjoyable event....Met a lot of people and made some new friends even though I own one of those wild and crazy Bow Rider boats....LOL

Boats don't race from one stop to the next? No timing is involved? Why would this be more dangerous than just cruising around?

That is correct, it is not a race, nor is it timed!! But seems to be frowned upon for some reason??

If it's not a race, then why do some people feel they MUST participate in an enormous speedboat? If it's all about the fun and the fellowship and the good cause, wouldn't a smaller boat (say, one that's allowed on this lake) work just fine?

They already have boats that aren't allowed on LM. It also seems the ones that own the "big boats" like to travel to different areas for these events. And are willing to spend the money to make an impact on any local economy. (logding, food, fuel, event costs, etc.) Do the big boats have a bad reputation? Yes. Deservably? Not most, but a few.

Crappy : )

(Just outside of Nashville)

The big boats raised $280,000.00!  Thats not counting gas for 200 big boats @ 200 rooms and 3 days What did the lions club raise? somebody tell us  I bet less than 10,000.

A poker run is not a race, but the better cards are handed out early!
