I have not had it done... because thankfully I have not had severe back problems. I was a WC adjuster for many years and now work for a PI law firm. I can tell you some of our clients have had pretty good result from decompression therapy. I think it depends on the diagnosis. A large herniated disc with radicular symptoms into the legs probably would not benefit if the herniation is combined with severe stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal) whereas a disc bulge without stenosis and spondylolisthesis would benefit. Before you spend loads of money you could try an inversion table --they sell them at Academy Sports and many people have great results doing their own decompression using the table 10-15 minutes a day.
I hope your back gets better -- I know it's miserable dealing with back pain.

First i would ask my doctor if a less aggressive treatment like an inversion machine is a good first try.
