Not Lake Martin related, but a true American hero was killed in Afghanistan recently. NFL player who gave up millions in the prime of his career to join the Army Rangers with his brother because of how 9/11 affected him. Took a bullet for my freedom. Rest in peace brave warrior...

Yes, it is sad. However, I'm disturbed that our society seems to grieve more when a well-known person dies in combat than the one that was pumping gas when he enlisted.

BO, I do not think this type of news is cause for any debate period. BUT since you asked, the guy at the gas pump did not have a lot to look foward to, unless he owned the pump, this Hero gave up millions and a very good career . How would he compare with other athletes,(let`s say for instance, Ali). Enough said PERIOD.

So if you're one of the millions of good decent folks who happen to hold down menial jobs, you don't have anything to look forward to? You're not allowed to fall in love, raise wonderful kids, take pride in their accomplishments? I guess that's all "meaningless" in your eyes, unless you can work a million-dollar payday in there somehow.

And who's to say that the kid working the gas pump isn't paying his way through college, which will lead to medical school, which will lead to the saving of thousands of lives? I guess those saved lives are worthless, too, unless some of them happen to be multi-millionaire athletes.

This is not an indictment of Pat Tillman, or any other soldier who is putting his life on the line. But to say that Tillman's sacrifice is greater because he had the chance to make more money is just plain wrong. You should be ashamed. However, for you to feel that particular emotion would require a heart and a soul, and nothing you have ever posted here indicates that you have either one. (I could say the same about a brain.)

I work an average of 45 hrs. a week. My wife works anywhere from 45 to 50 hrs. a week . We pay our bills and we have food on the table and a solid roof over our heads. WHY do you need more? It is very unfortunate for all of the soldiers.

So how does it feel, knowing you don't have anything to live for since you don't make millions of dollars? I'll bet you had no idea your family was so worthless, did you? Be sure to thank JIM for showing you the light.

(Note for the intelligence impaired: this reply is full of sarcasm, all of it directed towards JIM and his ignorant, unfeeling post about how the deaths of other soldiers aren't as meaningful or important as the death of Pat Tillman, because unlike "gas pump workers," he had "more to live for.")

Boy, go oot for the weekend and see where an innocent thread goes!
Our young men and women who die in combat give the ultimate sacrifice, therefore, one man's sacrifice should not be interpreted as worth more than others, regardless of his status in society. I think the point here is that this particular death put a face on every soldier that does not come home to his family. It shows how passionately these warriors feel about freedom and liberty. It is not a law enforcement problem as Kerry would have us believe.

The commentary on the life of Pat Tillman should be in the context of our society's misguided notion of heroism. Pat Tillman is a hero, just as all other of his comrades are who fight for our freedom abroad. Where he came from, however, was a world of wealthy and talented athletes who have ridden the marketplace to fame and glamour and who claim to be "heroes" for their exploits. I don't think I will ever refer to Dick Butkus, Hank Aaron or Pete Maravich as one of my childhood "heroes" ever again. Sure, Ray Lewis is a pretty bad dude on Sundays in the Fall, but has he ever faced live fire from AK47s or RPGs??
