Alabama Alert

March 9, 2006

Lake Boating May be Restricted in Alabama

Background:
There are two bills currently proposed before the Alabama legislature that may have an effect on the future of your boating on lakes in the state.

SB 487 and HB 756 are currently identical bills. They "prohibit the use of residence boats, recreational vessels longer than 30'6", or recreational vessels with engines in excess of 500 HP in … Lake Harris, Jordan Lake, Lay Lake, Logan Martin Lake, Martin Lake, Mitchell Lake, Neely Henry Lake, Smith Lake, and Weiss Lake."

For a copy of the House bill language, click here.

Senate Bill 487, sponsored by Senator Dial, was heard before the Judiciary Committee on Wednesday March 8, and passed out of committee 10-0. It is now headed to the full Senate for a vote, as early as Tuesday March 14. (This means it is especially important for you to contact your Senator NOW!)

House Bill 756, sponsored by Representative Laird, has been sent to the Agriculture and Forestry Committee, and has not yet been scheduled for a hearing.

Action Needed:
1. Local lawmakers need to hear from their constituents. Please contact your representatives and let them know how you feel about this bill.

2. To find out who your State Senator is, use this link and type in your zip code: http://www.legislature.state.al.us/senate/senate.html

To find out who your State Representative is, use this link and type in your zip code: http://www.legislature.state.al.us/house/house.html

It would be a blow to the lake martin marinas as there wetslips would pretty much become useless. Lots of $$$ are invested in them and they provide a good income I am sure. I don't think that many ski-boats would pay slip rental year round. As far as my business goes, it's not on the lake, but 90% of my customers keep and use their performance boats on Martin and Jordon. Again, it would be a financial problem to my business as well. Maybe those with interest will call.

Can someone tell us where in the world did these bills came from?

What is the motive?

What lobbyist's clients would benefit from preventing large boats on Martin?

Why 30'6"?

Why 500 HP?

the marinas can make up the deficit by selling more skis, since that's an activity that people will once again be able to enjoy. And, ski boats use up a lot of gas; enough ski boats using enough gas just might offset the loss. (I know for a fact that I use less gas in an entire summer now than I used on any given weekend-- sometimes any given DAY-- 20 years ago; I'd be surprised if I was the only one.

I don't wish any marinas, or amy other businesses, ill will, but I've decided that, on this issue, I'm going to think about what's best for ME, not them. (When they start doing what's best for ME, then I'll start doing what's best for THEM.)

By the way, I don't think there's any chance at all that this bill passes; politics is nothing more than big business, and nothing speaks louder to politicians than money.

The State of Alabama had $156,269,000 in new powerboat sales, and $274,733,000 in total powerboat expenditures in 2004. How much revenue will the state lose in sales tax and registration fee's if this ridicules proposed bill is passed? Anyone who reads this, please write and call your Senators to stop this nonsense!

Interesting numbers...but irrelevent without much greater refinement.

How much of $ was for boats that were going to be used on landlocked lakes...over 500 HP or 30'6"...1%???
