Osms, I beieve your question was intended more for though than an answer..
I would add to John's list some of the World's finest hand woven and knotted rugs. I am not sure about camel hair farics but suspect it is a possible export from this region.

I posed the question because I have wondered what would these countries do without oil wells. Are they so rich that no one needs to produce any goods for export other than oil, OR is Islam such a repressive religion that it stifles its members and kills any desire to develop? Is the hopelessness combined with the indoctrination into Islam, from birth, of its citizens the reason for the current problem?
By the way, oil represents 75% - 90% of the GDP of most of the Islamic countries. For Iran copper ore, and natural gas are #2 &3. Persian rugs are not mentioned as a major export. Without the world market for oil they would truly have to eat sand.
