I hope that everyone on this forum is as sick of the bad press the Lake has been getting this year as I am. We at Lake Martin Living are going to launch a huge state wide campaign to get everyone excited again about being part of our great lake community...Lake Watch and the HOBO's have been notified and are as excited as we are!!! THe grand idea is to clean up the extra shoreline exposed during the DROUGHT of '07...the money made from the recyclables will be donated to Children's Harbor..after the clean up day...January 12th we can then boost about HOW CLEAN our LAKE is....we need sponsars, warm bodies, and ideas to hype this!!! Whatcha think???

I think your magazine hasn't been worth reading since you ran off the best writer you had. And that was before I heard the reasons behind his leaving,

Besides that, good idea. I suggest all who participate watch their backs.

lowpool, sounds great to me.........soon as this football season is over we'll all be good friends again!!!! BTW, here's an idea to try on............why not sponsor a "adopt a shore line" approach to get all kinds of civic effort going (similar to the adopt a highway) so there can be some type of organized approach to the annual cleanup activity? Would this augment the current effort or just confuse it?

Just my 2 cents.

I have been involved with several of the past lake clean up efforts and to say the least the turn outs have been minimal in terms of the number of volunteers. Which to me is appalling as our lake is just that our lake and all Lake Martin stakeholders should be willing to take 4 hours out of their busy schedules to help this great cause. But unfortunately people are inherently lazy when they think such efforts do not benefit them directly, even thought the lake clean up efforts in fact benefit them.

What needs to be figured out is a way for each and every homeowner around the lake a way to easily dispose of their current lake debris, as out in front of our house we have old tires, rusted metal poles, an old rusted out metal boat rail launch, etc. (and I do not own a truck to haul to dump or dumpster). I know this sounds crazy but if you want to have a huge success in cleaning up the lake, below is an email I sent to Mayor Young over a month ago, which has gone unanswered.

Dear Mayor Young:

I am trying to figure out a way to allow all Lake Homeowners with a way to clean up miles and miles of shoreline which have not been seen in over 25+ years or more of the debris.

The problem with the APCo Renew Our Rivers Annual Clean Up or any clean up for that matter is getting volunteers, so I was wondering if Advanced (think this is who purchase Sunflower) would be willing to allow the homeowners to place all this lake debris at the end of their drives and on a specific day once a month for like the months of Dec and Jan they would send around trucks and crews to pick up all this debris.

If they would, we would make every effort to have their efforts noted in all the local papers such as an article entitled -Advanced Waste Supports Lake EcoSystem and then have an article written about their efforts in supporting the local community in cleaning up the lake. As this is a once in a life time opportunity to really make a difference in cleaning up the lake environment. Any ideas here or who I might contact would be most appreciated.

I know the above is a long shot, but never hurts to ask as certain corporations love to receive free publicity regarding helping others and especially supporting the environment.

Some places (like Auburn) have periodic garbage forgiveness days when you can put things out (that won't fit in the can) and they are picked up. It would be just super if our garbage company would do this, and not just once but once in a while. That might help prevent the refrigerators and such being thrown in the lake in the first place. However, if the garbage people won't do it, perhaps folks with trucks could volunteer to do it for this clean up. I have been amazed at how helpful everyone seems to be and the good will people have expressed concerning getting some of the trash out of the lake. thanks

All the negative publicity I can produce. I am going to driveproperty value back down to reality so maybe then I can affod to partake.

The way I see it, if you can get someone to buy your property at the 2002 market value then consider yourself lucky to break even. If you purchased after Hurricane Ivan, I am sorry - you are going to lose your extra investment.

Property was way overvalued before the drought, houses weren't selling before the low water so sit tight and get use to it. If you are willing to take the "loss" I would be more than happy to buy your place at "fair" or "reasonable" price.

Welcome to Ghost Town Martin. How many condos were sold in the last 6 months (minus auction sales). How many were available during that time frame?

Someone else said it, I'll repeat it.........."the best time to buy lake property is today"..............that insight for me comes from watching the markets around the following lakes over the last 30 years; Burton, Lanier, Hartwell, Sinclair and Martin since '03.The "entrance fee to the game" is relative, it's just the price you pay to sit at the poker table.

PP, I agree with you a 110 %. I hope the prices drop like a rock. Then maybe I can buy at a reasonable price and not at a totally unreasonable inflated price. As of right now I would not touch it. It may take this MAN made body of water many years to be a full pool. It was intended for flood control and generating power, not to float a boat, among other recreation pleasures. Make your bed ,lay in it.

That is a great idea. Once we get back to our normal high pool, low pool levels we could have an annual day to keep the 480' ( or 483') mark clean yearly...

I think that would add a method to the madness instead of chaos...THANKS! BTW: Roll Tide :-)

You (by "you" I mean someone at your magazine; I don't know who that was, and even if I did I wouldn't know if that person was you) wrote this and tried to attribute it to the writer in question: "Russell Lands has leased their cabins for decades at rates well below what the market would bear.

Expansion and population growth on this lake is not only inevitable but vital to the economy of the surrounding counties and communities. This individual that wants to stop expansion and growth would be saying "I've got my place on this lake and I don't want anyone else to be able to get one." Selfish to say the least.

Russell Lands has done an excellent job of leading and directing the development of Lake Martin. Forty years ago most of the other private properties around this lake were sold off in small lots that resulted in virtual shacks being built that people enjoyed using as fish camps, but actually decreased the value of the property. Today you see most of these smaller lots being bought up three or four at a time and replaced with one home. I'm afraid that the "fish camps" are fading fast. Progress is sad or wonderful depending on how you look at it.

We are fortunate to have Lake Martin - it is a wonderful asset for us to enjoy."

When he said "Don't print that as if I wrote it," you changed it a bit, and tried again. When he said "Don't" again (surely within his moral, and probably legal, rights) you said "We won't," and then did it anyway. Which I think is a reprehensible thing to do to someone who had just lost his mother, and who in fact was writing a story about her.

Follow the link to get the full story, and all of the emails; he tells it much better than I ever could.

P.S.-- I think you got off lucky. Had I found myself in that situation, I would have sued. And I would have won.

Well I am not the editor...and again there is always six sides to every story...

I always read Growing Up and loved it and even asked what happened to Mr Bailey when I took this job. I promise you the link you provided is one side and the other side is quite different.

I am a very open-minded person and refuse to jump on Mr Bailey, Gwen, or Russell Lands band wagon in this matter. I can only try to make a positive impact from today. I can not change the past nor avenge a wrong word or hurt feeling.

My main goal in this project is to help clean up our Lake. I was born on Lake Martin and will probably die here. I am ashamed at what has been exposed this year. I am also terrified ( as a mother) of what my children have been walking on...I want and will make this happen REGARDLESS of an article published or not published.

I guess it is too much to ask for petty differences to be put aside and allow The entire Lake Community to present a united front against the negative NATIONAL press. Can't we decide ourselves to take a different approach and use this opportunity to grow -

When the Good Lord brings the rain back and we are again at the Glorious Full Pool mark...How nice would it be to be THE CLEANESS LAKE in the Southeast. Can we at least agree THATis a goal worth us ALL fighting for ???
