I have a really good friend who is running for the State Legislature in VA as the Republican nominee. Rich is a retired AF Colonel and is the kind of person we always hope will represent us in politics -- honest and acting from the highest principles. He and his wife have given so much to their community and to the Republican party in their District in VA.

Anyway, he called me this afternoon to give me a rundown on his campaign. He told me he is going door to door, talking to regular people, and asking for their support. He told me that he hears over and over that people are longing for national GOP leadership that they can believe in. They want to come "home" to their party. They are tired of the partisan politics of Washington and are worried about the future of the country. Not surprisingly, most people he talks to are worried about the future of the country, and are concerned about the overwhelming majority running the country at the moment.

You may or may not know, but VA was a red state until the last election when it went blue. Rich is part of a movement to try to take the state back to red. Like many places, the GOP in VA has been scattered amid the party split.

Of course, I'd like to see my friend win, because I know what a fine person he is and I have every confidence that he win. I found his observations about his discussions with my former neighbors and community members very enlightening. I wish the national GOP could sit down and talk to them too.

What we are sick of is the selfish ways of almost all in politics. It seems that the majority go to washington and forget their morals, values and principals in which they are elected to perform for the good of the people and the nation. They begin to think about their own personal well being or their States well being and not of the country as a whole. They soon become corrupt and we lose trust. The government grows to satisfy each politicians wishes at the expense of the working man/woman.
Glad your friend is on the right track. We ARE looking for someone different. Someone who has not made a life out of being a career politician. We NEED term limits!
John F Kennedy was a republican in todays standards. The parties have changed and have all moved left over the years. I was not able to vote for the first time until "The Gipper" came along however.
I watched the damage Jimmy Carter did as a child. I remember the long gas lines. I was hot and board to death sitting in line at a gas station. What a waist of a beautiful summer day. I could have been on Lake Martin!

As long as politicians are careers, the average middle class has no dedicated representation other than some special interest groups. Tis why I have voted mostly voted against all incumbents for the past three election cycles.

liked the link.. but was he a pilot who saw combat ? Would vote for the dude in any case, an Air Force guy. Seriously lacking on executive leadership with military experience, in my humble opinion.. but what do I know??

No, Rich was a missile guy, not a combat pilot. But he does have a pilot license.

I wouldn't say he was lacking in executive leadership. When I worked with him, he was the Military Assistant to the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Policy (Technology Security) so he was pretty involved at a high level for a number of issues. And when he worked for the Air Force Secretary, he represented the USAF on some pretty high level issues involving the sale of aircraft to foreign governments.

The thing about Rich is that he is gifted in bringing people together. And since the VA GOP is trying to repair a splintered party, I think that Rich will do them a lot of good. He told me that he really isn't interested in serving long term as an elected official, but is really interested in working within the party. And he could have made a very comfy living as a beltway contractor, but chose public service. The pay for the job is only $18K, and he has to raise $500K for his campaign.

He was also an Eagle Scout.

Which is a lot more than we can offer to those great GOP leaders Dick Cheney, Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh

Do the words "chicken-hawk" mean anything to you. Cheney, Gingrich and Limbaugh are all for war as an early option as long as it is someone other than themselves or their family members dodging the bullets. Obama has more respect for and understanding of the needs of the military grunts and their families than those three blow-hards combined.

unless you have credentials to use the term to "military grunts" in your post.. It's usually reserved for those of us than have 'been there, did that." On Memorial day weekend no less. Clear insight into liberal regard for the military.. Whatever, will not let you screw up my weekend.. Boats to run and fish to catch tomorrow.. Will find time on monday to attend a sevice honor the dead men and women that served on your behalf.

Look, That's exactly what I'm saying. Obama is aware and supportive of the needs of the guys with their boots in the mud. Cheney et al pretend to be talking for them but are actually compeletly without any regard for either those soldiers or the guys with scrambled eggs on their hats. Their only agenda is pushing and preserving the most extreme wing of the Republican party and the financial backers of such. If you don't agree give me some examples of where I'm wrong about Obama or the chicken hawks.

Arch, what branch of the US Armed Services did you serve, and for how long?

I didn't serve. Neither did Barack, Dick, Newt or Rush. I don't recall ever claiming I did.

I plan to spend Monday driving through the North Ga. Mountains. On Sunday my wife and I will be visiting the graves of her father and brother. Both served and survived. One died of natural causes at 82. The other was killed in an auto accident at 28. I hope the fact they didn't die in combat doesn't makes their service less honorable?

If the 2 posters above did serve they have my deep gratitude for defending the right for me to freely express my opinion. What bothers me is I'm not sure they realize that was part of why they served.

Dick Cheny - out of Government

Newt Gingrich - out of government since 98

Rush Limbaugh - never been in government

Bill Clinton - first to have regine change in Iran as policy - repeatedly refused bin laden on a silver platter - chose to fight the many attacks on his watch as law enforcement isssues - how did that work out for NYC?

Hillary Clintion - voted for all resolutions in support of war in Iraq and Afaghanistan- now Secretary of State

Rham "Dead Fish" Emanuel - in congres voted to fund all wars- now chief of staff to the messiah

Joe Biden - Voted for BOTH wars in senate - now Vice President

Nancy Pelosi - voted to fund both wars while in congress - now Speaker of the House

I could go on, but what is the point? There is none so blind as those that will not see.

The ultimate insult. Great job Arch.I'm pretty sure they knew why they were serving. They deserve our thanks and honor, not you liberal barbs. Enjoy Monday. I won't insult you as you do others and will assume you know the significance of the day.

than a chicken s**t like Archie and the Messiah. Of course in Archie's world view 95% of Americans would be ineligible for elected office, or better yet, they can serve as long as they promise never to defend us with military force. But wait a second, didn't the most merciful Messiah send thousands of troops to Afghanistan?!?!? What's a mind-numbed liberal to do with a warmonger like Obama.

Archie, its so hard to take you seriously.
