Artur Davis' Take on the Election

I heard an interview with him today and his take on the election that is interesting and seems plausible. First of all, we know the modern Democrat party sees everything through the lens of race, creed, sexual orientation and gender. Conservatives see the world through the lens of a person's ideology and could care less about any of these things. We view conservativism as a set of beliefs about the proper role of government, personal responsibility, equal opportunity without enforced equal outcome, etc. And we see liberalism and the modern Democrat party as an ideology that believes in big government solutions, redistribution to favored constituencies, etc.
What Artur Davis is saying is that in this election cycle the Democrats successfully misrepresented conservatives writ large as just another constituency group rather than a set of ideals and beliefs applicable to everyone. And what was this caricature? Of course it was old, white males that are insulated from the rest of the world and are racist, homophobic and only interested in the wealthy. Those of us that are conservative of course realize this is ridiculous but the Democrat party base had no problem swallowing this hook, line and sinker. And he further believes that the Democrat base is more socially than economically aspirational. This is a key point in his thesis! In essence, they will gladly exchange economic misery for gay rights, gay marriage, abortion, contraception, legalization of drugs, affirmative action, etc. And they see this caricature of conservatives in opposition to those aspirations, or at best ambivalent to them. He recognizes the attraction of the freebies handed out by Obama and the usual demonization or the GOP and doesn't discount their value but believes these are secondary to their fixation on their social aspirations. His evidence is how else do you explain those demographic groups most harmed by Obama's failed economic policies voting for him in droves?
Of course the next question is whether Romney as the nominee played into this strategy, especially since he is a rich white guy and his off the cuff 47% remark. Mr. Davis thinks not so much. He pointed out something I had not focused on and that was that the two polls most accurate in this cycle (PPP and ABC/WSJ) had Romney winning 9 days before the election. So what changed in those 9 days? At least in the swing states the campaign focused on energizing the base with their societal aspirations and it worked. We on the right saw this as desperation given their failed economic beliefs but in fact the left has spent the last 75 years indoctrinating the populace with left wing societal ideals and have made them primary to economic ideals.
So what he believes, and I tend to agree with him, is that our problem is with our culture and the 75 years of indoctrination in the leftist social beliefs coming from our school system, the media and government. And when you look at our own microcosm on the forum you have to see his point. While we conservatives argued from the perspective of economic policy and the obvious monumental failures of leftist, big government policies embraced by TOTUS, our usual suspects (GF, Archie, coppertop and 2muchecstasy) were fixated on abortion, contraception, gay marriage, etc. I took that as a sign of desperation because they had nothing positive to say from an economic perspective and in that regard I may have been wrong. In fact, as long as they are doing OK economically, and maybe even not then, as long as those social issues fall the way they like they will vote for the Democrat that they believe or perceive is best on these issues.

Not sure just yet except job one has to be to stop the slide of our culture toward Gomorrah. I am also thinking we need candidates that can articulate and be credible about our social beliefs. What we cannot do is try to be half a loaf on these issues as our advisors on the left tell us we must. That is certain electoral disaster ala all our failed moderate candidates. If we are going to be portrayed as extreme no matter how squishy the candidate is we might as well have a candidate that can make an articulate, forceful and compelling argument.
I suspect now that the left's maniacal desire to destroy someone like Herman Cain as a viable primary candidate had as much to do with his ability to connect with African Americans on their social aspirations as well as their fixation on race. That he would also articulate an attractive economic vision would have been icing on the cake.
It also tells me that nominating moderates for national office is a huge mistake and that is exactly why those on the left are so graciously advising us to do so. They realize that we will get the worst of all worlds with these kinds of candidates. They will be demonized as extreme by the Dems and the media (a redundant term I know) and will be unable to convincingly articulate a vision of these social issues that makes them attractive because in fact they pretty much believe what the Democrats believe. Again, instead of offering them a real difference on the issues that matter and articulating the rationale for the beliefs they simply come off as Dem-lite. That is not a winning combination.

I think it is time to take the playbook away from the dems and use it. I would love to see a national wave of civil disobedience. If every person and small business would quit collecting and sending the 'voluntary' taxes to the empirical federal government we could strangle the beast that is eating us. Choke off the money and the government will be forced to bend to the will of "we the people". Idealistic for sure, but drastic times call for drastic measures. They can't put us all in prison.
A more realistic hope is that some true leader will come forth in the coming months and start the foundation of a viable third party. Marco Rubio, Bobby Jihndal, Mia Love, Nikki Haley (especially Nikki Haley :<),,, ) Artur Davis, Herman Cain, would all be a good start on a new party IMHO.
