The following from a Burt Prelutsky blog:

"Speaking of making money, lately it seems like every radio show I listen to and every TV show I watch is jam-packed with commercials for gold. I have no idea if gold is a great investment, but I keep wondering why, if it’s as good as they claim, these folks are so anxious to sell it."

"The other question is: If gold is going to continue rising in value because the dollar is going to plummet like a stone, what are they going to do with all those worthless greenbacks once they unload all their gold?"

The whole gold play relies on two events: 1) continued collapse of the dollar and 2) inflation. Have both of those occur and bingo, gold goes up. But its a natural resource subject to the law of supply and demand. As for me, it seems a reasonable hedge against inflation but switching over to gold or any other precious metal en masse seems to me too risky. Not that I think being a contrarian is always the way to go but it seems like in natural resources and real estate, the time to buy is when everyone is selling and vice versa....

It might go up, but probably be short term...because when it peaks the investers will start dumping their gold ...the big investers are the ones running these commercials trying to run the price up...so they can sell and make money. Its a gamble
