Not Bad for a cautious investor:

2011 Up 8.44%
2010 Up 3.30%
2009  Up 15.11% and (drum roll here)

2008 Down 21.96%

Not making any political comment...just stating the facts as they apply to me

Archie:  Here is the S&P 500 for 2007-2010.  Also, if you look at the Dow Jones charts your results are pretty close.  If you define conservative by being broadly invested in the markets in things like index funds then it sounds like your numbers are right on track.  Your down year (2008) was less down than the markets and your up years were not quite as good as the markets.  Sounds to me like a well balanced, conservative portfolio which is exactly what you want for retirement funds.  Mine is a little harder to track because I have a combination or 401k's, IRA's and my wife's TSP from her years at EPA.  My bottom line number seems to be at about where I was 2-3 years ago which reflects that the markets have been up and down but generally down from their highs around 14,000 in 2007.  Still, if you are in this for the long haul it seems to me you are on the right track.

Biggest challenge for us baby boomers is that given our life expectancy we really can't afford to move our retirement funds into things like t-bills or other really safe investments because we need our funds to grow.  Otherwise we will run out before our clock runs out.

2007 5.5%
2008 -37.0%
2009 26.5%
2010 15.1%
