I stopped by our lake house last night for a brief stay after a busy work week.  About 11 PM, I sat out on the deck under the full moon enjoying the unseasonably the warm air.

I was surprised to see about a dozen fireflies in the maple trees  this early in the season.  I was also surprised to see a jet trail from a passing jet as clear as day with the light of the full moon.

It's nice to take in a few of the simple pleasures that can be enjoyed at the lake away from the city lights and busyness of our everyday lives.

I was also surprised to see the fireflies last nite!! The airplane contrails are always beautiful against the sunset!  Lake Martin is truly Paradise!!

I was surprised to hear the frogs and insects last night.  Just the usual Spring serenade.  My coonhound was really enjoying it.  She deposited herself on her "universal observation station" (that would be the chaise on our porch) and we had a really hard time convincing her to come in.

My favorite thing is to walk out early in the morning with my first cup of coffee and just listen to the birds.  It sounds like Spring.

Good things often come in threes!  The morning after seeing the fireflies and jet trails around midnight, I spotted a Pileated Woodpecker on a Hickory tree next to our lake house.  We have seen these woodpeckers before but it has been a while.  Seems that every visit to Lake Martin brings some sights that I don't get to see every day.

Although I love these birds (and all birds), they have done enormous damage to my cedar-sided house.  They have powerful beaks and are like a jackhammer...if they decide they want to break through, they are breaking through.  If they stop with a little hole, the squirrels take it from there and are well on their way into your attic or worse into the stud spaces below the attic.  I have always stopped short of eradication..but have had to resort to some drastic means to find an environmentally sound solution..e.g. cutting down all pines, hanging plastic owls, snakes, etc on side of house....but I love 'em...I love 'em...well..I almost love 'em....

Wow, you saw a pileated woodpecker here?! I have seen red headed woodpeckers, but not one of those. I used to have one that came to my feeder when I lived in VA. They almost look prehistoric they are so large. Now that is cool!!

I've got one that pecks on my house now. Not a big problem yet though because he seems to be concentrating on the metal roof! huge bird.
