I just went back and read all the posts for the last week or so (catching up since my last visit) and reading about spring fever, etc. and I started thinking; a dangerous thing for me.

My fantasy is that I'd like to box up all my suits, shirts and ties, and donate them to Goodwill, quit the rat race, and move to the lake and make a living from cutting grass, general maintenance, and/or watching out for vacation homes for weekenders or those far away like Feb.

I wonder if that fantasy could be feasible?? If I thought it would work, I would be there next week.

BTW, I have 3 rescue dogs, Patches (very old & blind German Shorthaired Pointer, Penny (very smart Blue Tick Hound), and Pip (cute Basenji-Beagle mix).

I took my 12 year old to the Atlanta Braves fanfest last weekend, so spring and warm weather can't be far off, (even though I froze my arse off standing in line for autographs w/my son).

Have had the same fantasy for some time now. It's the "making a living" part I am having trouble with. By the way, I enjoy the winters on the lake almost as much as the warm months. Can't beat the quiet.

Yeah, it's the making a living part that keeps this a fantasy for me as well.

Good to hear from you BT.

I think if you have college covered for the youngest and a decent retirement fund for yourself established, then just maybe. I currently have my Brother's Son periodically look after my place since I lost my renter, but it is sporadic. He is in Wetumpka and it is a haul for his trips to to my Lake place. So, I chip in extra to try to cover his gas expense. I think the biggest concern is the travel time and gas expense of running from place to place since the Lake is so spread out. Could you come up with enough business if you concentrated on just one section of the Lake? Larger projects such as landscapping along with lawn maintenance and cabin caretaking might work.

I am rather out of touch, so don't rely on my view point.

If you cut grass, get a 2-cycle engine mower. The steep hills around the lake will kill a 4 cycle unless it has an oil pump. Most do not. They use an "oil dipper" that relies on gravity to keep the oil under the crankshaft.

If you can use a level and have some carpentry skills, you can make a good living installing decks, docks and other small projects.

Harbor Pointe marina charges $80/hour for boat work. So, if you can polish a boat and add gas, you can make a living in the field of boat maintaince. You will not earn $80 ,but make a living, sure.

I pay $1800/ year to keep my boat at Harbor Pointe rather than fight the up and down of the lake level. I keep my boat at my dock only a few weeks out of the year. Mud wasps plugged up the outboard engine exhaust drain holes of the last boat I had. Then they shorted out the battery connections so it would not restart out in the middle of the lake. Oh, the disadvantages of a quiet slough over a windy point. More bugs.

Jim, If I am not mistaken the FBI Academy is located at the Quantico Marine Corps Base (Quantico/Triangle, VA). It is approx. 15 miles South of me. In that area, he will be removed from some of the congestion and traffic. How long will he be attending school there? Is it a law enforcement class of some type or is he entering the FBI? I have heard it is a first class facility.

Not sure how their football team compares with UGA. (LOL)

He will be there for 3 months, and yes it has to do with his job in law enforcement in order to advance to a higher level., it is a highly prestigious appointment, very proud of him. As most Dad`s are their sons idol, he is my idol as a person.

My congradulations to him on his appointment and to you as a proud Father. Virginia is a beautiful State once you get out and away from DC and the congestion. April and May are a particularly nice with the blooming trees and flowers. Hope in between his classes and studies he has the opportunity to take some of it in.
