4th of July weekend, during what surely was an attack of rampant dumb***, we set out to check out the scene at chimney rock. The weather was threatening from the west but we thought what the heck, we may just get wet.  Oh No! the trip home was punctuated by a detour into Willow Point and my insistence that everyone get into a life vest to wait out the storm.  I was taking 2-3 foot waves over the bow prior to stopping, not good in a 17 1/2 foot boat.

Now my question.  Assuming I have learned my lesson and want to check the weather radar prior to a boat ride, what is the best, most current and accurate website for this purpose?

Well the NWS is about the best you can do.
I have a TV on my boat and leave it on Ch 8-3 out of Selma but if that is not an option, If you have a smart phone there are many radar apps out there.

Best thing in a situation like that is, read the sky, know the area you are in and pull into a cove shielded by a down wind side and point your bow into the waves.

On a Smartphone, you can download a weather app from WSFA TV in Montgomery. You can zoom it down to the LM area, set it in motion, and it clearly shows where the bad stuff is and where it is headed. Other sites do the same, this one is just a local.

The site below can be used from any web device, is what I use on my dumb phone. Select your zip code, then save a link... It is animated, and you have zoom capability.

If you have an iphone or similar you can download an app called MyRadarPro. It finds your current location and gives you the radar.

Also you can go to Tallapoosa County Weather Alerts and set up text message for any weather warnings from NOA.

Cannot remember the website, sorry.

The WSFA site is fast, free, and you can set it to track your location. I've  been  using it since Talisi told me about it a few weeks ago, and it even works great when I'm out traveling around the country. I've downloaded several radar sites (including professional aviation apps) and this is as good as any I've tried.

It is especially good after one switches from AT&T Wireless to Verizon and the fancy phone actually works around the Lake.

My thanks to all of you who responded to my question. I have successfully downloaded the app from WSFA to my smart phone and it worked great this morning as we tracked the storm that came through.  Hope none of you suffered any damage or flooding.  Alexandr City was a mess as I left for Birmingham!

As a Sky Watcher thru abc33/40 I use the Weather Call . Not free. $10.00 for three phones.
It is address specific. Means I pretty much ignore the sirens as they are still on county wide alert, not specific to where I live/work.
