I searched the forum for cell phone coverage and found a number of hits. But these are getting dated.

I have an old phone with cingular (about 3 years old). I currently have good service at my cabin and generally on the lake. However, wanting to upgrade, the folks at Cingular say I have to convert to GSM? service. Greek to me. Cingular folks say they are not sure about lake coverage under this new service.

Question: Does anyone (1) use cingular and (2) have the newer GSM service and use their phone in the Stillwaters and blue creek area? If so, how is your service?

I cant give any information on Cingular service. However, if you end up switching, I would recommend Verizon. I have always had great service all over the lake. My friends rely on my cell phone when they are at the lake due to the fact that they are often without service. I dont know if everyone with Verizon has had the same luck, but my service has been great.

My opinion is that CDMA technology is the best, so Sprint or Verizon is my choice..

Do not go with SPRINT if you are the Lake. It sure hasn't worked for me over the past year. My last attempt was in late August. I had the same bad experience with Cingular. Next time will be with Verizon.

the customer service is for the birds..............they suck, they stink, they are rude.........and......well, that's all. Coverage wasn't too bad.

I will be looking at Verizon. Seems to be the most widely recommended.

We use Alltel - coverage is good around the lake; customer service is fair.

I currently have Verison and ATT&T, The ATT&T is poor but the Verison seems to work most places on the lake except at my home in the Blue Creek area. What I don't get is when you go to Verison's web site and put in your zip code it states no service. When you go to Wirefly's web site and choose a Verison plan it takes you directly to another cell service again because they say Verison has no service on the lake???

I'm also looking for a plan that has nationwide roaming at no charge as well as good lake coverage.

I have been with T-mobile for six years (back when they were Powertel, then Voicestream) and I'm well pleased with phone service and customer service. I live in Stillwaters and have good service on other parts of the lake as well. All of their plans include free nationwide roaming and no long distance charges. They were the first all-digital network, so you don't get frustrated with analog reception.

Longleaf...that is what I am also looking for. Cingular has a plan with nationwide roaming, 1000 peak minutes, and rollover for $39.99 per month. New phone is $69.99 with a $50 rebate.

My problem is that the cingular clerk says the new phone uses a GSM??? access instead of what I have. This may not work at the lake. My service now works good in the Blue Creek area and around the lake.

Can't upgrade my currrent service and keep my old phone.

Darn.

Graycove...I think I'm going to try T Mobile...2 Camera phones, 800 min anytime min., free T mobile to T mobile, nationwide roaming and long distance....$69.99 per month 1 year contract including phones plus $100 cash in my pocket rebate (after mail in rebates)!! It's about $10 per month more than other 2 phone deals I've seen but you don't have to buy phones you get $100 back and it's only a 1 year agreement.

We have T-Mobile and ATT.
T-Mobile is by far the best. I have a GSM ATT phone and it switches to t-mobile when at the lake.

I have had several services over the years......often two at a time to insure coverage. I travel nation wide on a weekly basis and Verizion is by far the best; it is now my only service.

T-mobile is good if you travel to Europe on a regular basis, but it has major holes in the USA. Sprint is only good in metro areas and along highways, but it's cheap.

Go with Verizon.. I had Cingular and could not get a signal at the lake at all.. if you go to Cingular's site and enter zip for Eclectic it shows no coverage. Verizon coverage works at the lake and bham.

My experience is this: T-Mobile is good if you are west of the power lines in Blue Creek and it gets better the closer you get to hwy 63 past Windemere and the Ridge because that is where the antenna is located. Verison is very good because their antenna is located accross the street from the Lake Martin Mini Mall on HWY 63. If you are thinking about Verison, consider whether you want a tri-band phone or all digital. Tri-band phones are capable of receiving an analog signal although the single is not very good when the phone has to switch to this frequency.

Bottom line, none of them are good everywhere but Verison is my choice as of right now. I don't know what the merger of AT&T Wireless and Cingular will do for lake coverage yet but still Verison is about the best overall. Forget Sprint unless you want to roam on an analog signal when you are not in there network. Sprint is great in metro areas and highways when their network is available
