Wow, this forum is a wonderful asset. I asked for help and got tons of thoughtful suggestions.
I am at the lake now and my new dehumidifier has totally eliminated our downstairs smell. I wish I had done it sooner.
Many thanks to lake plumber. If you don't know this guy, and I didn't, make sure you call him with any plumbing needs, I sure will. He emailed me advice and answers to my many questions and was ready to help if I had needed it.
I will keep his name and number handy.....

A Frigidaire, 50 pint capacity.
It was highly rated, recommended for basement areas. It makes a little noise, but a downstairs placement (where we have 2 guest bedrooms) wont be a problem.
I was concerned that I would need to run it constantly, but that is not the case. I ran it for 3 hours, taking out 3 pints of water and the smell was completely gone. I suspect I will need to do that periodically, but not a problem.
I will say again--lakeplumber is a mighty helpful guy!
