I keep hearing about white bass can anyone tell me what they are talking about. I have been told they are hybird fish that Auburn brought in and that they only get around 2 lbs.

White Bass is a native fish to Lake Martin. They are kin to Stripe Bass but smaller, 2 lb. average, 6 lb. record. They are a little more Perch shaped. In the mis-60's, I was a student at AU and had an afternoon job with the AU Fisheries Dept. I saw the first Stripe Bass and Hybrid Bass fingerling which had just arrived from a South Carolina Fishery to be released in Martin and other lakes. The Hybrid is a cross between Stripes and White Bass. I don't believe this happen naturally, but in a Fishery with the help of Biologist. To distinguish the two, Stripes have unbroken lines (or stripes) and Hybrids have broken lines. I don't know for sure but I'll bet most "Stripes" caught in Martin are Hybrid. Also, both are excellent on the grill.

the are really fun to watch with a green monster light. They spend most of the time swimming upside down or sideways. They are agressive feeders.

Is the hybrid bass a asset or a problem. I can catch them in droves.. they don't taste very good.. and I can't find a crappy in all the old places.
