Is it common to see red foxes in the daytime? Saw two about 9:00 last night. Been here 3 years and this was our first fox sighting. Then saw one in our front yard about an hour ago (5:00PM). Just curious.

...don't think it is common to see them in the daytime although I have seen 4 or 5 during day over the last 15 years....chances of daytime sightings probably increase with habitat disturbance and/or disease (rabies in particular)....extreme hunger could also put them on the move regardless of time of day/night,,,,

Thanks BigFoot. I was thinking it was uncommon and particularly concerned about the possibility of rabies.

Are you in the paces peninsula area? I've seen several in that area, day and night. One evening at around dusk my son-in-law says he saw 4 or 5 in a small pack crossing the road that was very strange to here.

There is a den near my driveway. We have seen 3 young ones this year and they are out in the morning and evening on a regular basis. We have seen them for several years.

DJ, what you saw was Red Haired Foxes that were crossing the road, be careful what you post here, some may think badly of you.

Some already think badly of me, I rate a minus 4,000 or something like that anyway and have a few iggy's, I'm ok with it. But thanks for the thought.

Modern version of a previous post - And I am sure you are concerned about what people think about you. Again, a salute to our military - they keep those of us at home safe.

We have seen more this year than before. Mostly they have been crossing the roads or in the wooded area across the slough. They still have fear of people and go the other way when sighted.

Foxes breed in late Winter, and their gestation is about 60 days. You're likely seeing the new pups investigating their surroundings. They are more curious, and much less shy and sly as their mature parents. Even the mature foxes will move about some during the day, but they are most active at night when their prey is much more easily attacked.

I have a popular denning area about 100 yards from my front door. It has been "vacant" for two years but I am happy to see a LARGE brood of pups again this year (I have seen 5 different pups, which is a HUGE brood for a red fox pair!)

They are extremely intelligent animals, and can be trained to be comfortable around humans. I have even trained 2 in the past to come to the sound of my calls, and to feed on my deck.
