I've been wearing out West Point Lake and having a great time but all I hear about is Lake Martin! Coming down I-85 from Atlanta area where is the best place to launch and head to the Acapulco Rock area (and where exactly is it on the lake map)? Looks like a great place to retire to someday when the thugs run me out of Atlanta.

Take I85 south to Tallassee exit Hwy 229. Follow 229 untill it dead ends into Hwy 63. Take a right on 63. When you go over the bridge there is a public boat ramp on your left and plenty of parking.

To get to "the rock" go under the bridge. If you stay in the middle and go straight untill you cant go any more, take a left and you will see "the rock".

I think you have been provided wirth some good directions. Why go to a specific point. There are many pretty of places on this big Lake. Enjoy the Lake for all of its beauty an glory. You will never regret it. Navigate slowly with the low water and find out just how beatutiful this body of water is. You wil then become a convert. The fad places to go will really distract from the wonderment of this body of water.

There are so many more places of wondernent to see than the tourist crap. The Lake is not made up of one spot and that is it. You will of done yourself a major disservice. I want you to enjoy the expericence and not just a specific fad.

If you are GPS enabled, Acapulco Rock is located at :

N32 42.737 W85 53.571

I would also recommend that your first visit to Acapulco Rock should be on July 4th. There is hardly anyone there and if almost feels as if you have the whole rock to yourself.

If you start to miss West Point, head up Sandy Creek and enjoy the best that Dadeville can send the lake. Seriously, with the lower water levels, places like "The Rock" are the best places to go. Buy a good contour map before you come, and stick to big water so that you can avoid any "surprises" that can mess up your trip (and your lower unit) in a heartbeat.

I agree that 4th of July is the best. The really good part is you dont even need a boat. You can just walk from boat to boat and go anywhere you want in the area. The problem is staying sober from the people putting adult beverages in your hand as you pass through on your way to the next boat. By the time you are half way there the transition between boats becomes very hazardous. Wear a life jacket.
