Subject:   Getting my hind-end kicked by a Caravelle.
Date:   5/22/2012 5:33:53 PM

About a month ago I test drove a 1995 Caravelle with a 3.0 Mercruiser.  It ran great for at least an hour during the test drive so I bought it to use until the lady re-upholstering my boat finally decides to finish (that's another story).  Anyway, I brought the Caravelle home and launched it.  She ran great for about 15 minutes then bogged down as if she were out of gas.  Thanks to the assistance of a true Lake Martiner, I was towed home.  I Made sure there was sufficient gas in it (even added about 1/2 a tank of supreme to mix with last falls left overs).  After cooling off, she will crank and run fine for basically the same amount of time every time, then do the bogging down thing and eventually quit.  Until it quits, it will pin your head back during "hole shots", and plane off rather quickly.  Even after it bogs down, it will idle fine and even rev to at least 3000 rpm (I quit there) in neutral.

I have checked all the fuel lines and none are weak or clogged.
I have sprayed cleaner into the carb to clean it.
I have pulled the screen filter to make sure it is not stopped up.
I have replaced the fuel pump.

At this point, if someone tells me to replace the brake lights on the trailer I am willing to give it a try!!!

When I bought My Chaparral it did the same thing..Turned out someone had put the wrong gas cap on it...It was suposed to be a vented cap....May want to check to see if it is vented or the vent may be clogged . If the vent is not in the filler neck check to see if a dirt dopper has built a nest in the vent for the fuel tank...Should be near the fuel fill.

Just my 2cents worth..lol

Water pump impeller maybe?  Was it a cool day when you drove it for an hour?  Could it be getting hot?

The real answer, though, is what CAT sez.  I don't even qualify as a shade tree boat mechanic.

Geez, will it flush ok?....oh wait, you said boat motor (old habits). I'd say that it is definately something fuel. I defer to the resident expert, i.e., CAT.

that sounds like a very plausible solution....I had the same problem with a weed eater.

We have an '04 Caravelle and the fuel vent is under the cap, they may be on to something about the wrong cap. every once in a while I have to blow the vent (insert funny analogy here) to be able to fill the fuel tank. For the record, I use a compressor.

Check valve in the fuel tank hose fitting.  Being that it will idle and run at low rpms, and want allow you to run high rpms it is most likely your problem.  It is the FIRST item in the fuel food chain.  See ya this afternoon.  Now, go sell some furniture SMERPH.  lol.

I only speak up because I had the issue you're talking about on my 97 Caravelle.  When my impeller went out, the only thing that signaled something was wrong was the smoke coming from the engine bay due to the exhaust and other rubber parts getting way too hot and starting to melt.  Never lost power.

Understand. I had a Sears Gamefisher 7.5 HP outboard one time that was willed to me from my father in law. Supposedly it was "air cooled". So I started it up ot of the water one day to make sure it ran. Couldn't have run it for more than about 30 seconds (yes, a cringe at this point would be appropriate). Put it on the jon boat, set out, and about a minute later the engine slowed and stopped. Started it up again and the same thing happened. After the third restart it wouldn's tart at all. Long story short: It is air AND water cooled and I had ruined the impeller.....and after the engine seized from overheating three or four times, it too was ruined - no compression. When I posted that question I was relly hoping that was NOT the problem he is having.
