Does anyone know how to remove mildew from canvas covers or from the Bimini tops? I have tried Greased Lightning, but it didn't help. Thanks

I know this has come up on the past on many occassions. But I specifically remember that some had a home made solution, like vinegar based I believe... might want to search some old post. Probably from last spring, seems that is when the question normally comes up.

Thanks...after I posted this question, I went to boat maintenace posts and some one suggested searching mold and mildew. That is a great feature. I read them all and then went to Home Depot today and bought what was recommended. Thanks a lot.

One part ammonia, one part hydrogen peroxide, one part distilled water. Although clorox and greased lightning are great cleaners, you should NEVER use them on fabric or vinyl. Your stitching will break apart, then too will the fabric. Gentle, gentle, gentle.

... just like when you wash a loae of whites with bleach, they jsut disentegrate and fall apart. <sarcasm OFF>
I treid the homemade solution once with horrible results. Bought the high priced cleaners only to read the active ingredieints and find out that I paid about $8 for a PINT of bleach.
A msild bleach and water solution with a good rinse is the best and cheapest.

Don't use bleach on upholstery with cotton stitching. It will eat up the threads. Better made upholstery has a different kind of stitching that is not affected. I didn't figure this out on my own but was warned by an upholstery shop that fixed mine.

I wish someone smarter than me would explain how bleach will disintegrate stitching in boat upholstery,and not bother stitches and fabric when washing clothes with same bleach ??

1 cup of bleach and 5-10 gallons of water to wash you clothes. Plus a great rinse spin and rerinse gets most of the bleach out.
1 cup of bleach in a 5 gallon bucket filled with water will not do much for your seats. I had to use 10% bleach to see a slight improvement. Plus once a strong solution to the stitching how do you rinse it out you can't get to the inside....

It doesen`t require a strong solution of bleach and water to remove mildew and mold.I use it in pressure washers and hose end sprayers to wash house siding that is pretty well diluted, and it removes it completely.I know ,siding and boat upholstery are not the same,but mildew and mould are.Maybe you don`t leave the weaker solution on long enough.Just my thoughts,may be wrong.

Why make your life difficult. As for boat upholstery, see my post on 3/9/09 under "boat Maintenance" Mold and Milder (sic). Product works. No fuss, no mess, no hassle.

The rinse doesn't get to the 'inside', how did the bleach?
You can buy all the high dollar cleaners you want, but if they beat mold and mildew, they use chlorine and/or caustic. Just read the active ingredients.
