Why does a bank as big as Regions have to pay this kind of dividend?

stock dropped from at least $35 to about 10. Dividend was probably set when stock was selling at a high price. % at that point in time was probably reasonable.

bank stock traditionaly sells for 1.5 to 2 x book if I remember corectly. Most regional banks are selling for less than book now.

Larger and international banks have written down their mortgage problems. Regonal banks have not done as good a job and institutional investors know this and are shunning the regionals.

Banks paying that high a dividend will probably reduce the dividend at the next meeting. Regions has one coming up.

btw i have been out of the market for about a year now and don't know when to get back in. I have a friend who uses Ken Fisher, i follow him and avoid the 1.25 % fee. Fisher is usually good for doubling your money in 5 to 6 years.

Regions increased their dividend from $.36 per quarter to $.38 per quarter on Dec 17, 2007 with the stock at $24 (6.3%). On March 14, the stock price was $20.00 (7.6%) . The last dividend was June 13 with the stock at $13.25 (11.5%) . At todays closing of $9.68, it is 15.7%. Next dividend is September 13-14.

The stock has dropped 60% since the current dividend was first paid. Gotta tell ya something.
