We're finally going to put in a seawall. So we're looking for recommendations on both what to do and what not to do. We'd also like any recommendations on who to hire for installation. We're leaning toward the traditional 12 inch concrete wall. We have 200 feet of shoreline that is 1 foot to 3 foot deep in the Smith Mountain area. We plan to have our boat lift lower 3-4 feet at the same time. Please email us at amonette516@comcast.net

Water will eventually eat away at a cinder block wall. If you go that route pour a good footing, use rebar and fill the cells with concrete. Good luck KW

I would say the first thing you need to do is go by Alabama Power on 49 and get a permit, ask to have the shoreline contractor contact you, have him come out and go over your ideas, he will tell you what you can and can't do as well as the rules for construction, like having to have rip rap in front of your sea wall when it is done.

agree but if you have a contracctor that feeds you a lie you will never know, best to kopw before you hire some one if you do not plan on doing the work yourself.

but I don't do seawalls. I contacted George and recommended a very good seawall contractor.. Neither he, nor I, lie to clients.. That's why I used them for the seawall at my house.. And no, I don't have a dog in this fight, not one penny of referral fee coming to me.. Just the personal satisfaction that
the recommendation was a good one.. I will do the same for you, should you solicit my advise..

If your area allows it and you like the look, seriously consider rip-rap. Cost efficient, indestructible, will "weather in" and blend much better with the shoreline both in color, texture and contour.

I would have to think rip rap would draw snakes, but have to say I have a lot of rip rap and have never seen a snake, not that they are not there, just have never seen one.
