HOW DID JEFFERSON KNOW??????

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe,
we shall become as corrupt as Europe .

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those
who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the
pretense of taking care of them.

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves
against tyranny in government.

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.

Thomas Jefferson said in 1802: 'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by
deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property - until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers
conquered.'

He didn't. The same problems have been around since the country was created, and people, like Jefferson, have said the same things.

You must remember that hound was a GS or SES something and moved in crucial circles of the defense establishment at the Pentagon.. So Pal, we must not question, take it on faith..

Let's review:

1. Lotowner posted quotes from Thomas Jefferson and asked "how did he know". Presumably, Lotowner believes that the quotes can be applied to the current day.

2. Although TJ was a brilliant mind, he has not be credited as being a pychic so it is unlikely he had 2009-2010 specifically in mind when he wrote.

3. TJ's ideas and writings have been quoted, applied and expanded upon throughout the history of the US, so it is relatively easy to conclude that the problems/concerns have existed throughout the history of the US.

Or was it just your intention to try to be just a smarta$$?

My intent was to see if TJ's thought process might apply to today's government philosophy. TJ was not a psychic but he did understand people and government and how the two can get out of control. Don't forget that the US is people and how the people are impacted in terms of security, government control, state's rights, etc. is applicable yesterday and today.

Thomas Jefferson was possessed of a deep understanding of human nature. While he (correctly) expounded on the virtues of government based on Judeo Christian values he also (correctly) established that there would be no US counterpart to the Anglican Church (of England) and that the US could not collect taxes from diverse denominations to pay for the establishment of an official government church. Thomas Jefferson’s setting forth the foundation for the establishment clause of first amendment is curiously independent of his own penchant for hedonism.

At the College of William and Mary, Thomas Jefferson assimilated a true liberal arts education… one steeped in philosophy and history. He became adroit at discussion, debate, and essay. In essence, he evolved to become the epitome of statesmanship. That his philosophy on democratic government and the entrapments set before it, are relevant today, does not surprise me.

We have lost our zeal for freedom and self-reliance. We have lost our understanding that God is watching us. We have forfeited effective debate and argument in favor of incivility. A liberal education today is undoubtedly desensitized to socialistic ideas and feeds off of cynicism and entitlement. The skill for true debate, critical analysis, logic, and reason (deductive as opposed to inductive) is NOT fostered. History and classical philosophy, as subjects of great import, are not promoted.

President John F. Kennedy correctly directed, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” He was restating the personal convictions of our founding fathers as evidenced in their great work: The Constitution of the United States of America.

I am no less human than was Thomas Jefferson. I only wish I were the man.

He's dead. Presumably you would like to think like Jefferson, not be Jefferson himself.

You are right to a point about a classic liberal arts education, but then in this age of being a specialist, people with classic liberal arts educations have trouble finding a job. I believe that St. Johns University provides a classic liberal arts cirriculum.

I've always thought that would be a wonderful thing to pursue

Firstly, if you can't swim there's always the kiddie pool.

Secondly, I am personally tired of college grads... especially specialists... who can't write, organize, or reason through problems. I would be willing to bet, I could take a smart person, with a TRUE liberal arts education, and make a darn good field geophysicist out of him or her. I'm sure he or she could both write and think effectively.

An old boss once said "hit 'em with logic and reason and they will fall for it every time".

Not sure if it is generational or just a common human failing, but an awful lot of the time it is very difficult to get folks to realize and address the real problem rather than chasing all the tangential bovine shinola. Absolutely amazing, some of the things people chase while missing the point altogether. Run into it all the time - from newbies straight out of college to old f@rts my age who should have figured it out by now. No telling how many times I have had to stop meetings and ask a simple question something like: What are we trying to do? What problem are we trying to solve?

Specialists have their place - and I value their input immensely - but we need clear thinkers to lead and organize the efforts of those specialists. Occasionally you will find a specialist with great analytical, reasoning, and leadership skills. If you find one of those grab him or her and do whatever to keep them. They will end up being the next vice president of the company - or higher.

I never met TJ, and suspect even Hound hasn't either. (Sorry Hound, but I believe I have a few inhales and exhales over you). But it was his ability to see through the BS and reduce things to concepts that stand the test of time that is amazing. He was one smart cookie.

Yeah, I've met him... saw him at Montecello... LOL

Not sure why you are jumping on me -- I'm in agreement.

Meetings would sure be a lot shorter if people didn't go chasing white rabbits down a hole and if they didn't throw red herrings on the table. I used to play much the same role as you describe, because my personal idea of hell is to be stuck in an endless meeting.

An obviously failed attempt at humor based on an exchange earlier in the thread...no "jumping" intended. My bones are too stiff from the cold - or what Alabamians call cold to do much jumping these days....:>)

I hear you. Got lulled into a false sense of security regarding cold weather after last winter.
