Just sold a boat to someone who recently moved from Indiana,so he needs an AL boat driver's license. I remember several years ago you could take the test online on an official marine police site, get a certicate if you passed and then go to the courthouse, give them $5,and you were good to go. All I can find now are private sites that make you think they are AL official, and for about $30,you can take the test.Did the state farm this out like they recently did the MSD inspection? Can my customer trust these private sites? Also is his IN licence transferable? I know I can find this out Monday by calling Montgomery, but I am delivering the boat tomorrow, and want to tell the buyer what he needs to do. This is the first sale in years to someone w/o a license,so I just haven't kept up.Thanks in advance,Robert

From the State's site...

"How to Obtain Boat Operators Certification/License:

1. Applicant must go to Department of Public Safety Driver’s License Examining Office in county of residence.

2. Make application and pay appropriate fee ($5.00).

3. Answer medical questions.

4. Successfully complete written/oral exam, or show proof of exemption (boating course certificate of completion or age exemption) .

5. Take proper form to Probate or License Commissioners office to have the “V” class placed on driver’s license"

Looks like if you go in person, it's %5.00.... but if you take it online it's $29.95

Just recently retook the exam, as I move back to AL and picked up an AL Boat Test guide at the courthouse and on the first page it states you can take the exam online at www.boat-ed.com/al.

I took the test on Wed and my certificate came in the mail on Friday.

Cost is $29.50 online and you do not pay till you pass (passed the firs time - LOL), or you can take at the courthouse for like $5.00 or it might even be free the first time.
