Help everyone. I really rely on the expertise and experiences of others and have come to really appreciate the input on this board. I need a new roof on my home in Alex City. I am posting to ask: who's reasonable in price but still does a great job, what are the do's and don't of roofing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have a friend building in Stillwaters that just got a great job for $25/100sqft labor from an out of town crew. If you use local talent watch out. I paid $40/sq and I got a quote as high as $60 from Palfrey. I'll try to get the friend's roofer's name and number.

I hope you are right... costs for tear off and reshingle in Atl are running $80/Sq. labor and decent shingles are $25-30/ Sq.

Make sure you don't pay them anything until the job is done. (If they're legal and licensed, this won't be a proplem.)
Make sure they tear off the old roof, and re-flet it before reapplying any new shingles. Make sure their estimate includes clean up, or you'll be cleaning up forever. (If they have to clean up, you can bet they won't "throw" shingles etc. everywhere.)
Get at least 2 or 3 estimates with names and numbers to people they've done jobs for to see who is best recommended.
Do your homework first. If a roof leaks, it wasn't properly applied to start with. So make sure this is a question to ask.

Thanks guys! I knew I could count on you. I recently had some trees trimmed and used Floyd's who came highly recommended on this board. I was very pleased. Did a great job and was reasonable with the price. My mother had told me to make sure the roofer used nails instead of staples. What do you think about that statement?

Shhhh...just between the two of us (ha!)......Home Depot is working at the lake. We needed new windows and could not find anyone to do it so called Home Depot in Opelika. A bit pricy but the job was done in a day. Reliable. On time. Good warranty. Good clean-up. Nice crew. (no, I do not work for them).

I've got the name and number for the roofer I mentioned. He is Esmen Nadin, phone 334-524-0872. He has a South American crew and does a good job as far as I can see. The price I quoted was for new construction--obviously removing an old roof and felt will be an additional
cost.

Lots of guys weighed in on your request and I agree with all of them. Watch out for bad guys.
