Evidently AP will start letting the water down starting October 15th.

Does anyone know how quick the will try to get back to the proposed levels.

The Rule has the winter level (484') by November 22.  That is only 38 days instead of the Rule that has 83 days between full pool and winter level.  If they stiil want to be at winter level by November 22 that will reqiure a drop of a tad more than 2" per day.  The rule shows a drop of about 1" per day.

I have been told they are only planning on dropping it by 3 ft this winter.

I don't believe that rooster. They have to follow the curve. The rules only allow a 10% deviation day to day. The new rule calls for 7ft drawdown. I could be wrong but will be shocked if we only loose 3 feet.

As to the original question your answer is there too. The rule curve is the rule curve with little deviation except in cases of extreme drought or flood.

Whichever way it goes, I am happy.  Been a great summer.

I still have time to do a first ever October dive off the pier, especially with Nate threatening to keep the lake above 490 until pull the plug day.

Just pull the plug and drain whatever this mass of raw sewage and fertilizer that has filled lake martin this year. The lake has been green and slimy all summer. I put in some new wood steps this year, and they are covered with an inch of slimy green substance of some kind. It's disgraceful what has happened to lake martin. We used to have crystal clear water. Now it is a cesspool.

I've been around the lake many years and anything underwater has been slimy.

Moldy, it's called algae...and it happens every year during hot summer months.  Get over it.

You make some pretty strong statements about "disgraceful" things happening to Lake Martin, that it is a "cesspool", a "mass of raw sewage and fertilizer".  Care to share your source of information on how polluted Lake Martin is?  Or is this simply your opinion?

The facts are a bit different as shown by 25 years of Lake Watch volunteer water quality testing on more than 30 sites on and around the lake.  Our data is analyzed by some pretty smart people at Auburn University and is shared with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.  It's also backed up by periodic scientific studies by AU and testing by Alabama Power Company.  So whether you agree or not, Lake Martin is considered to be the cleanest lake in the state.

I suspect many readers will disagree with you.

I've had my place for about five years. The first couple of years I could easily see five feet into the water during the summer. At the end of summer there would be a film f algae, maybe an eighth or quarter of an inch. For the last few years I can't see more than maybe two feet, and the water is very green. And like I said, there is at least an inch of algae on steps. I don't know all the tests that are being done, but if they test for clarity and algae growth and are not showing lower clarity and more algae growth then I question if they are accurate. Certainly I can't be the only one who is noticing the degradation.

Moldy, my guess is that your lake home is in a relatively small slough, maybe a bit shallow, and what you describe absolutely happens around the lake.  Could be faulty septic tanks nearby, a neighbor applying too much fertilizer on his lawn, a large flock of Canada Geese.......

What I have a problem with is your claim that Lake Martin is getting worse when the opposite is true.  You may have a localized problem, but please don't assign it to the entire lake.

Thanks, Dick Bronson

Thanks, Dick, for the testing that yall do for lake water quality.  I agree that the algae is a thing to deal with each year.  I keep a good push broom at my pier to keep the steps from being slippery, and try to pressure wash when the water goes down.  There have been forum posts about the clarity of the water the last couple of years.  At the end of my pier, at water 10 ft, I cannot see toward the bottom of the lake like I used to.  Perhaps it is my garden on my little pier that is causing the problem. I know I do not fertilize the yard like I should.  And I am not in a relatively small slough.  Maybe it is the boat traffice to The Landing

Still water is fantastic and I know some slime is a part of lake life, like snakes, fish frys, and fun.

Wasn't trying to step on any toes, red. I just wanted to bring attention to a problem I fear ala power might be ignoring.

Wow, been at this lake for 40 years now and I see no difference in the water quality or the slimy steps.  I can’t tell you how many times I have fallen on the concrete boat ramp after a month or two after full pool!

If folks see any pollution or poor water quality please report it!

APCO doesn't ignore problems. They were in my slough several times this summer to eradicate an invasive Species of Lilly s. They stayed on top of the situation until it was taken care of. They followed up with calls nd emails and responded to every communication. If you report a true problem they will address it and correct it. They have a vested self interest in protecting the lake. More so than any individual.

Go get 2 bottles of Sam's Choice Purified water. Empty one of them and fill it up with Lake Martin water. Put them side by side and be amazed. Be glad it is not Logan Martin. I can still see my toes when standing up with my chin in the water. Go in Logan Martin with a white tea shirt and come out with a green one. If the wakeboarders would stay out of the slews and play in the big water it would also help.
