Do the doors on the storm shelters open up toward the sky, or in some other direction?  Said differently, if a 24 inch pine trunk were to land on the entrance to the shelter, coultd the occupants still exit afater the storm passes?

My neighbor has one shped like a small underground gasoline sorage container under the slab of his house.  No doubt the would survive the tornado, but if the house were to collapse on the vertically opening hatch they would be trapped until someone realized they were there.

You are assuming that I want them out....remember he is the one who planted the tube and covered it with sand just before a huge rainstorm....the thing popped out of the sand like any dutiful cork and he had to dig it out and rebury it.  And I am surprised he would install something that would trap them under debris?  Just hoping Merry's tubes are better designed.

Yes, That sure could happen. Trees and debris can fall on top of a shelter. We can pour a concrete pad around the top of the shelter to protect it. Our underground shelter doors open to the outside. You can keep a door jack in the shelter, but if it's a super big tree or a whole house that may not work. Proper placement of the shelter is very important for this reason. We also register each shelter with the EMA and 911 so they know where to look when rescue time comes. The best feature of the fiberglass shelter is that you should be able to get cell and internet reception. We also can run electricity into them, but that may not help if the power is down. Our above ground shelter doors are wheelchair accessible and the doors open to the inside. Hope that helps!

You guys make me laugh! We anchor bolt our shelters to the ground with concrete so they can't get out of the nest. Merry

Thanks.  Just would hate for a poor soul to survive the tornado and not be able to get out!!

Good luck with your endeavor.  If I ever am so fortunate as to become a full-timer I may be coming to see you...
