I saw in a previous post that some people are having HD reception issues.

I get CBS and NBC in HD out of Montgomery off an antenna. I'm on the west side of the lake (Real Island). Fox and ABC are available in HD but the signal is weak and I can't get them where I live. People in Montgomery can.

If you live on the east side of the lake you stand a pretty good chance of getting stations in HD from Columbus GA. Even from my house I was able to get a couple of Columbus stations.

I have Dish Network and no HD networks are available on Dish, just so you'll know.

I've researched all of this stuff pretty well because I got and HDTV before the 2006 football season so I could watch Auburn games on CBS.

HD signals are on DirecTV.
Not any of the local extra (2nd on up) channels are on DirecTV. You'll still have to have an external antenna for them.
Just beware though, DirecTV's "B-Band" HDTV converters output the same frequency as the local TV channels, so you'll have to run an extra piece of coax to watch the multiplex channels if you get them off Direct.

I use DirecTV and an air antenna. On DirecTV I get the regular channels plus HD. I also get the HD channels out of New York and the local channels out of Los Angeles.

Most of the Montgomery channels are the same as New York (like the Jay Leno program) except for local news where I use the air antenna.

My sister saw this post and told me I might be able to get info here. I just got DirecTV installed and didn't know the major networks didn't come with the most basic package - where'd that come from??? Anyway, while I'm waiting 45 days for the network waiver to see if I even qualify to get the East or West feed, I would like to get an antenna. Can someone recommend something, not too expensive, and not to obtrusive so that I watch network news? And, uh hum, American Idol? <grin> Thanks for any advice on the subject.

I just found out that the antennas will no longer work in February - everything is going digital. So, that's a dead end. But, I'm going to raise some stink with the satellite companies!

Sure antennas will work with digital, and after February. All HD transmission over the air is in digital. Currently most stations are transmitting an analog signal and a digital signal. The plan is to stop the analog transmission in 2009.

The type of antenna you will need to get HD is dependent on where you live and how far you are from the stations.

How are you getting local channels out of Los Angeles?
