The link below is a menu of classroom activity which is a prelude to President Obama's speech to students on 9/8/09. Anyone know what his speech will be about? Anyone besides me think this hints of indoctrination? Anyone besides me think the Department of Education should be eliminated?

True story being sponsored by the Dept of Education. It is for Pre-K to 6th grade. Link to the program description below. Can you imagine the outrage if Bush proposed to do something similar?
This is one of many reasons I send my children to private school.

A portion of a blog from Meredith Jessup at Townhall.com....
I know what I would like to tell the government: leave our kids alone.
I don't need the government teaching my children anything about what "personal responsibility" means--a subject especially out-of-line coming from a President proposing $9 trillion in deficit spending for the next decade.
I don't need the government teaching my child its own definition of "citizenship" because I believe being a member of our family is exponentially more important than being a community citizen.
I don't need the government to explain what civic duty is, especially because the President and I differ significantly in our opinions of what civic duty, personal responsibility and citizenship all mean.
Parents, prepare yourselves--your kids are going to be made a captive audience to this forced nonsense. I suggest you plan your own civics lesson to teach your children when they get home from school on September 8. Teach them that "civic duty" does not mean doing whatever the President wants you to do, but instead, being strong-minded enough to stick to your principles and formulate your own thoughts about the role government should play in our lives.
Teach them that "citizenship" means something more than living within the geographical borders of the country and paying taxes; it means caring for and looking after your neighbor because it's the moral and right thing to do, not because the government told you to.
And teach them that personal responsibility is self-reliance and independence--ideas that can only grow to their fullest potential when a person maintains his liberty.
Do not begin to relinquish your rights and responsibilities as parents to the government. This massive abuse of government power--reaching into our kids' classrooms--is unacceptable. We've watched as prayer and religion have been tossed out the schoolhouse doors, but big-government influence continues to be ushered in. It's unacceptable--and the best way we can fight back is to take pride in the America we believe in and empower our children to carry on its legacy.

-I kind of like the idea od a presidenttalking directly to kids, with perhapss one addition. In teh first paragraph about preparing for Obama's address, I would have added a section about emphasizing to kids that it is "we the people" that elect the president, ..and although it's important to understand what teh president wants us to do (the topics in teh second set of learniig points), it is more important that the kids know that the president is president because "we the people" put him there and that it's his/her job to do teh things 'we the people" want done. -I'm assuming that the contents of teh talk to the kids will be about kids working hard in school, that education and hard work are the keys to success, and that in America everyone can aspire to be anything they want to be, even president, and that he is an example of that promise. -One of the good things about heving Obama as president is to inspire some of our most disadvantaged kids in urban and rural areas to see the possibilities for a good life, if they believe in teh effects of a good educaton and hard work. For teh America of tomorrow to be strong, we can't continue to have ever increasing percentages of thee population being ignorant and illiterate. -However,on another note, what I don't like are some of teh video clips I see of inner-city black students singing songs to and about Obama. To me that smacks a little too much of a cult of personality, --the kind of stuff you see in socialist countries. -My bottomline: I look forward to the 8 Sep talk to the kids, hope that it inspires them about the benefits of a good eucation and hard work, and that kids, especially kids disadvantaged by parents and neighborhoods that don't value education, develop a personal desire to succeed inspite of all the impediments that their societies put in their paths.

I agree with all that you posted. I just don't think that will be the message but we shall see.
As for me, if my kids were in public school I would probably keep them home that day and teach them about the Constitution and Bill of Rights and explain to them what the Founder's envisioned to be the proper role of government. You know, all the things my kids get in their school but would not get in the vast majority of government schools.

I'm optimistic too Yankee ... I hope the event comes off as you proposed. If instead Obama talks about health care reform, or any specific political topic he will have made yet another blunder. If it's "stay in school ... work hard ... and you too can become a mayor, congressman, senator, president" then it's a good event.

we need more plumbers, electricians .... doctors, nurses ... engineers and builders .... I didn't mean to imply that politicians were BETTER ... just that they were possible .... I never in my life wanted to be a politician, but somebody's gotta do it ... Thanks.

I just find the whole thing kind of creepy and I can only imagine the howls of protest if Bush had done something like this. My fear is that he is going to talk about collectivism instead of individual liberty and freedom or follow in Michelle's footprints and discourage them from striving in their careers for financial success and productivity. As I said before, I would take my children out of school that day rather than have them potentially exposed to statist doctrine.

I have a grandson in the fifth grade in the Alpharetta, GA (Fulton County) school system. I have been informed his class will not watch or discuss Obama's speech. This word comes from his teacher, but I don't know who made the call.

AU67, -I'm not sure how you feel about the Fulton county or local school decision, but I think it a little sad your grandson won't get to see the prez. No matter what he says, it can be used as a teachable moment. -But what's sad is what we talked about in another thra below; that is, the Republican Party or the anti-Obamains being considered as a regional party , --or worse, a racial party. It would be sad if a post-Obama-kids speech survey showed that only schools in the old confederacy didn't show his speech. -Like I've said before, the one good thing that I'd hoped would come out of this presidency, is that it would help America get past its racial issues --for both sides.

My grandson has plenty of opportunity to see and hear President Obama...he has more media exposure than any president has ever had. I applaud the teacher/school system's decision not to participate in this controversial matter.

Also, the politics of race are emanating from Obama and his administration, not from those who disagree.
