I have seen deer swimming on TV before and have heard fishermen tell stories of seeing them swimming. They are excellent swimmers. We had the pleasure of witnessing it first hand yesterday. We had been catching some rays and swimming at Chimney Rock late yesterday afternoon (pretty much by ourselves, maybe 3 or 4 other boats). Then we rode over by the island towards the Ridge that was burning to check it out. On the way back just as we got to the island that burned earlier this summer I just happened to notice a deer swimming across in front of us. It appeared to have come from the island that had burned and swam all the way across to the mainland. It wasn't a fawn but not yet full grown. He stood there for a minute looking around and then took off straight up the mountain. That was a really cool thing to see. Thanks goodness there was not a lot of traffic he would have been in trouble. Sorry the post is so long.

A couple of winters ago, I witnessed a grown deer swimming across the slough near us. She was being chased by two wild dogs who were also swimming the slough. It was very cold weather and the water had to be extremely uncomfortable. The dogs were losing ground (so to speak) in the water and the deer emerged well ahead of them and kept on trucking up the hillside. One of the dogs got in trouble and barely made it to the other side. Needless to say, the swimming tactic probably saved the
deer's life!
