There are several trees on our lake shore line that are missing bark from the ground up. How can I determine what is causing this?

It's a beaver. Very common on the lake. You will need to put some wire cage around all your trees or they will kill them Small trees they will cut them down.

I can attest to Beavers. They gnawed down an ornamental Japanese Maple and took it away. It was planted down near the water. After that, the next one was planted on higher ground.

I agree that there's a 99% chance it's a beaver.
If you're still curious, you can buy a trail camera / game camera and set it up to take pics and video at night.

Yep - beaver. One of those bastages did the same to the most important tree on our property, the one that gives shade over the back of our pier until midday. Really, really pissed us off, but nothing we can do now.
The trees will die without the bark around the base, that's part of the reason the do this. It may last a year or two, but it's dead, Jim.
