Several weeks ago there was discussion of gas prices and the economy in general on the forum. Several astute members spoke of the falling dollar as the main reason for what is going on with oil prices. I am a 'news junkie' but heard nothing of this being the reason for the current situation from any of the talking heads on TV till the last few days. It shows that some of you guys are really on top of global economics.

Now since we know that you guys obviuosly know your stuff, how about giving us solutions.

I think part of the reason has nothing to do with what any of the talking heads or the know it all...I mean forum members say...the cause is pretty simple....it has to do with the fact the gas prices have caused many to not travel or vacation or do the normal "relative visiting" driving they would normally do, so the oil market is starting to get stock piled. They (oil empires) have done exactly what they intended....hurt our economy and caused people to stop spending. No vacation or travel = no extra spending in stores, etc. They are increasing output more and more but the the damage is done and the traveling season is almost over. I mean if you drop the gas price $.15....so instead of $4 a gallon you pay $3.85....does that really make anyone want to travel? No....there is not enough oil/gas in barrels already to change the effects of what has happened. We will not recover from this for a long time. Man I miss Reagan.....we wouldn't be in this mess if someone of his caliber was running this country. Unfortunately look what we have to look forward too.....

Good old Ronnie. The best President in my lifetime, by far.

Possibly the original posters are like some of our current poloticians; good at pointing out the problems but very quiet when it comes fixing them.

This whole issue is a key part of this historic moment. The issues are too large to fit in a book but a few key factors to watch are things like the true coming of age of China (again), the continued industrialization of much of the rest of the world, the desire of much of the rest of the world to see a weaker USA (Reagan won the cold war by bankrupting the USSR, the Russians, Iran, China and many others figure that they can do the same to the USA now), etc. As someone mentioned earlier, the low interest rates we have enjoyed for many years, have contributed greatly to the dollar being so weak now. Look for interest rates to rise to stem looming inflation and thus, help the dollar a bit.

For our country to resist the economic attack, a few things are obvious. Energy is key. ALL, and I mean ALL handcuffs must be removed. Yes from the oil and natural gas companies (Drill Here, Drill Now), the upstart alternative energy companies (wind, solar, battery technology, hydrogen, nuclear, etc (the government and the communist green folks are in the way of success on all fronts). Yes, I said communist green folks. I forget his name, but when the founder of green peace quit the organization, his main reason was that with the fall of the USSR, the anti capitalism communist folks needed a new way to operate and took over his organization (and the whole movement) and turned it into the anti-capitalist, "formerly communistic" organization it is today. Green = Anti-Capitalist=anti-profit=former communist (dare I say PROGRESSIVE?)=exactly what Ayn Rand wrote about.

The Government needs to announce a "go to the Moon" and "Manhattan Project" initiative, get out of the way of and assist PRIVATE enterprise (with the profit motive) find the next level(s) of alternative energy production to lead the world (again) and break our fossil fuel dependence. And this time, don't give it away. Sell it at a rate to equal $200 per barrell of oil. Tit for Tat. In the meantime, drill, drill drill, and utilize our own energy buried offshore, in Alaska, in Shale and drop the price oil to financially obliterate the world speculators and the other producers who have bet on USA weakness.

Don't give me that "it wont help us for 10, 15, 20 years argument. That's what ya'll said 10, 15 and 20 years ago and look where that got us. Just the act of Bush lifting his part of the ban the other day drove the price down some, although temporary without congressional follow up. As soon as all this is trumpeted, the price will fall like a rock.

What can we do? Individually conserve, of course. But we must motivate the political will of our elected officials to get the ball rolling and stop standing in the way.A first small step is to go to the link below, read about it, and sign the Drill Here, Drill now petition.

Like I said. book ain't big enough.

Very much on target DSCR. Glenn Beck had a couple of congressmen on his show this week (CNN 7pm ET). A dem form HI and a rep from PA. They are forming a bipartisian group to put forth legislation to address all the issues you bring up, plus some. The best statement I heard either of them make was that the 'leadership' was NOT invited. The leadership staffs had tried to worm their way in to the groups meetings, but were denied access. These two guys seemed very genuine in their desire to pass legislation to do the 'right thing' on energy in this country, finally. I think they said they had a coalition of about 25 memebers already. Lets hope that keeps growing.
