I have a small 19 ft. runabout that generally sits in the water during the summer.  I would like to seal the bottom to prevent leaks.  It is just gel coat now.  Can someone suggest a method / location to get this done?  Thanks

Almost any place on the lake can bottom paint including us. Its really not for sealing purposes but more so that the paint sheds and prevents build up, growth, barnacles etc. Also helps with gel coat blistering as well.

My gel coat is showing signs of blistering.  If you could PM me your contact inf, I would like to get an estimate.  Thanks

A multi-coat Interlux 2000 epoxy coating is necessary to stop blisters, after you grind out the blisters and patch. Might be cheaper to trade boats, or buy a boat lift. You don,t need bottom paint on Lake Martin. Simply go to an island at the end of summer and scrub the bottom before you take the boat out.

Why do people bottom paint on this lake then?

Honestly, were you on LM.com at the Bar?  LOL.  Just noticed the time stamp on the post.  Enjoyed the visit yesterday.

Algae growth is almost non-existent and the brown gook that gets on the bottom is easily removed before you take the boat out of the lake--let it dry and you've got another story.  Compared to ugly bottom paint, scrubbing is much better and easier.  Bottom paint prevents barnacles in salt water, and reduces algae growth, but absolutely will NOT prevent blisters.  Blisters on a 19ft boat are best left alone because the hull is so thin you could weaken the hull or grind right through it while trying to repair it.  What's your experience?

Personally I don't like bottom paint because is slows you way down, and everybody knows that's against me!! Does it prevent blisters, I can't say for sure but I can't seem to find any on boats with bottom paint, same token an eggshell/flat finish hides a ton of imperfections! As far as weakening the hull due to grinding blisters, you would really have to dig, long after the blister or delamination is gone! If its already blistered, I say let it ride!

I have nothing but respect for this answer.  It is easy to make money off of someone lacking in knowledge.  I will "let it ride" and look forward to a new boat purchase in the coming years.  I noticed it slowing down last year and now assume that it was taking on water.  Probably water logged.  May be looking sooner that I want.  Thanks to all for the advice.

Just thought I would add a few comments. Blistering will deteriate the fiberglass over time. The liquid in the blister will have to be removed and all delaminated resin ground out and replaced. If the boat will be bottom coated gel coating will not be necessary. After drying and repairing the blisters the surface wil need to be coated with a 2 part epoxy primer and followed by modified epoxy bottom paint at the proper time to bond to the primer.
